I didn't find it boring or long when it was read aloud to me in my childhood. Nor do I find it so when I read it aloud in my adulthood. But I do tend to skip the elf-singing.

I loved the book when I was a kid. I also don't mind the extra stuff going into the movies.
It is an interesting read if you're into fantasy literature "archeology" or if you want to know more about Tolkien's universe, but it is not a good read for those who just want a good book.
