Well there are already ones for tablets and the in browser ones are accessible from tablets why build stuff that is already out there but build stuff that is not.

There is? I am guessing you are referring to for 4e, but I have no idea which one you are talking about. The character builder is in silverlight and doesn't work on android/ios.

Well i was specifically thinking about VTTs and not char builders but my memory seems to have deceived me. I do remember that there were a in development when i was researching htis topic about a year ago. I just tried Roll20 on my nexus while it works the response time is awful. I might be better an a more modern quadcore tablet.
There is a table in development targeted at the tablet market it remains to be seen if it amounts to anything.

I was thinking of a release by WotC, not some third party, or at the least a third party sanctioned/promoted by WotC.

Anyway, I was mostly thinking of a app that could be used to access the rules, both for players and DMs that wasn't slow, and could be used offline. I am not a big fan of VTTs. I really like the social aspect of sitting around the same table.

PS: Wizards didn't splash Fourth Edition over all the books last time either. The books are just titled "Dungeons & Dragons" but they clearly they are the fourth edition and the company does refer to them as that. Fifth Edition will also be heralded as "Dungeons & Dragons" but is clearly also the fifth edition and the company will recognize it. On the official company PDF store all the D&D Next material is listed under "Fifth Edition" already: dndclassics.com.
3e also didn't identify itself as 3rd Edition the cover (3.5e did though).

However, if you look on the first few pages, the official name were 3rd and 4th Edition. WotC might want to drop the "edition" to hope and avoid some warring. They've said before they'd love to just call it "D&D".

This ignores that editions are there for a reason, to distinguish between versions when someone has them all such as libraries or collectors. Even books where the content does not noticeably change have editions. If they don't give it an actual edition name we're still going to call it 5e or Next, it just makes it less consistent and more confusing for everyone involved. And it will be silly once they release a new edition and everyone is still refering to the prior edition as "Next".
Let's face it, there are already TWO versions of the game just called "D&D" which we identify as "OD&D" and "Basic" to differentiate.

The talk of the VTT as an app made me think about official D&D apps, which might easily be another way of getting D&D onto other places. A Compendium app and the like, which was rather needed. WotC worked so hard to get online and make useful e-tools but made them non-mobile friendly when smartphones were becoming omnipresent and tablets were emerging. Non-professionals over at iplay4e.com really did things with the Builder WotC should have done.

Too bad it will probably require a subscription or some other annoyance rather than something like Pathfinder's (unofficial) apps that have a one-time fee but are often updated.

A working character sheet on android and ios would be great... if it can support homebrew content effortlessly. This was a big issue with the 4th edition tools - that and changing stuff without warning (I have no idea if this improved later; my group eventually used a downloaded character builder that we know at least won't surprise us again)

A compendium app that runs on all os'es and particularly mobile ones should be something they should support and it should allow export of character data to a chargen application. I am not sure I would re-subscribe to DDI without some application support.
I also think that DDI should allow some micopayment option to purchase some individual articles and adventures.

What would be wrong with a release on the playstation? as Long as you have the in print edition how does it negatively impact you.
Because it raises the bar to entry significantly.

Now it occurs to me that it Wizards does anything on the VTT line it should be a console app.
So a niche game forces people to buy a $500+ product that doesn't directly make people play more of the game? That's not going to help.

Only if it is an exclusive console release. I simply do not see that happening.

Again I do not see a situation where there will not be a book release but in addition to the books?
