I think that the pervasive usage of "D&D Next" is relevant to the name of the new edition, but not because it will include the word "Next." Rather, I suspect that the books will be prominently embossed with a huge "D&D" and only elaborate on the acronym inside the book.

Maybe I am being thick. I understand the second sentence, but am not sure what point you are making with the first. Are you saying that you expect all press releases to call it "Next" but not the actual books?

Never understood why the DMG cones out later.....we want to run a game, not read the PHB for months.
Of the 3 books, I think I will need the DMG the least. Most of the rules changes will be in the PHB. The new monster stats will be critical. How to run a game, and design a campaign, will change the least. Something has to come out last, unless you believe WotC should delay until all the books can release simultaneously.

I just mean that no one is calling the edition "Dungeons & Dragons Next." I think the focus on the D&D acronym specifically is probably telling, and the brand may revolve around it. I don't expect "Next" to show up much at all after this summer.

You're not being thick; I kind of turned the subject 90 degrees on you.

I was posting my thoughts from the perspective of new players and DMs. If this version is about growth.....how does a new DM run a game using the rule books?

It depends on what's in each book, but in 5e you can probably play the game without the DMG. Mostly, you need player characters, checks and combat rules, and monsters in order to play the game. At least some monsters are definitely needed, and that's why in 3e the PHB included a few monsters as the appendix.

3e was much more rules-heavy than 5e, so the 5e DMG very probably is less needed than the 3e DMG. I think maybe the only thing which is really needed is conditions. You don't really need the chapters about "how to run a campaign", "how to design a dungeon" or "how to create a fantasy setting".
