Really makes me wish I'd made more of an effort to keep copies of more of the sheets I've downloaded over the years. Some of them that I really liked, yet never used, I know are now just gone forever so I can't point at them and say, "THIS is what I like in a character sheet."
I know what you mean. Back about ten years ago, maybe a year or so after v3.5 was released, I made my own character sheet as an expanded, denser version of the official WotC sheet; I just used the PDF of the WotC sheet, opening it in photoshop and cutting up and repositioning elements, adding extra boxes by copy/pasting elements from the original sheet, and adding new words by painstakingly copy/pasting individual letters from the original sheet and saving the whole thing as a simple .pdf image (I had no idea how to actually create the thing as an actual document, so I had to simply craft it as a picture.)
It had elements like a duration tracker in the center, a space to record Hit Dice with boxes for up to four separate classes, and four columns of boxes to check to indicate Class Skills (since I figured four classes should cover most characters, excepting only extreme cases.) Within a few weeks of posting it online there were at least 4 other new character sheets up that used the same layout as mine, with the duration tracker and a small area for notes in a center column, and the four columns of Class Skill checkboxes, but they were mostly improvements on my sheet as they were made as actual documents instead of simple .pdf images. I showed all of the subsequent versions to a friend of mine and he actually got really angry that people would make such blatant reproductions of my design, but I was just flattered that other people considered my design good enough to emulate so closely; besides, they improved on it by making it an actual document with embedded fonts and everything, instead of just my simplistic image file.
Unfortunately, I have no copies of the file anymore, and I don't know of anyplace online to find it. It doesn't seem to be up on rpgsheets anymore, the place where I originally posted it. That was about the same time that I created a 3E Espruar font by scanning in the new glyphs from the FRCS, and one of our fellow members of ENWorld hosted it on a website he had. I need to try to search online and find that font I created.
