A short rest is "one or more hours." Technically, nothing is stopping the characters from doing that except the DM. Mike Mearls even mentioned that in a video before the Starter Set was released. A couple of points though: Our DM simply stated you are taking a short - there was no discussion of hours, or stacking short rests. It was either one short rest or a long one - problem solved at our table. The second point, there was a lot of Hit Dice recovery at second level (where we all had two hit dice), where a 1 was rolled on one dice, and a 2 or 3 on the second. That meant that a character with 20 total hit points who was down 10 or more was only recovering 3 or 4 by burning all his hit dice on a Short Rest.

Did you add your con modifier to each hit die rolled?

Great insights, thanks. Trying to get a group together for a short testdrive, and I know at least one will try to abuse the short rest and try to lawyer himself into stacking them.

Yeah, sorry I didn't mention that or add it into my numbers - will edit it. My overall observation was - roll low with Hit Dice recovery, and only regaining Half Hit Dice per long rest, and the small recovery and dwindling resource definitely wasn't game-breaking.

Also re: HD on short rests. What resets the short rest timer? You can use one or more of your allowed HD a day on a short rest to heal but what's stopping you from doing 2 consecutive short rests (2 hrs worth) and pretty much full heal? The limit seems ambigous to me.

Healing wise, there isn't anything to gain from two consecutive short rests. During a single short rest you can spend a HD, see how much you get back, then spend more if you want to (providing you have them). No HD are regained until after a long rest, so no matter how many short rests you string together, you still only have that same HD pool to burn.

The only meta game benefit to stringing short rests is spell slot recovery for casters.

If you're referring to Arcane Recovery, it specifically says "once per Day during a short rest .." so I would take that to mean you must do a Long Rest in between

Well, there you go. No benefits to multiple short rests then. :)

I've been impressed by the elegant simplicity of 5B, it seems to hold together rather well. The jury's still out on high-level play, looking fwd to getting some feedback on that from the forums, since I don't have a 5e game going right yet.

Actually, the Fighter's Second Wind ability also resets with a Short Rest. Some folks have pointed out that the vagaries of what a Short Rest is means you can string together several of them in a row, recharging Second Wind and healing your fighter to full through repeated uses of the ability.
