a strict reading of the rules

Not to go too far astray, but I think "strict" readings of the rules are going to serve us worse in this edition than in the previous 2. Reading the rules and using DM discretion and a sense for what your table finds more enjoyable will serve better. This will mean various tables play under various interpretations of certain rules, but if they're all using their preferred interpretations, this should be fine.

Yes, I know some people did this for the previous 2 editions. Many of us didn't.

You won't get no argument from me about this... :) I've always played in the way you indicate. For example, in my first 5e session I run fast & loose with the rules about perception, stealth and darkness, because I have no patience with counting squares and figuring out the exact level of illumination...

OTOH, I've always found interesting to try and discern the intent and the 'correct' interpretation of a rule.
