D&D 5E Does 5E NEED a campaign world book?

Here's the thing: if you want to run a Greyhawk game, there's a wealth of material available on the interwebs - from official PDF's to the Oerth Journal to Canonfire! and their home-brewed offerings. If the Realms are your bag, then they have more support than any other world.

Want to scare players in Ravenloft? Yup, we have plenty of stuff for that.

In fact, apart from Psionics rules to support Dark Sun (and, perhaps, how to handle Sha'irs in Al-Qadim), there are more than enough campaign worlds out there to be used by players coming in to 5E. They just need to know where to find them.

WotC don't need to put effort into a 5E Realms book, or 5E Greyhawk book or any other such thing. There's plenty out there to borrow and adapt from. They can even promote the pdf's on sale from their site this way.

I'd prefer that they put their energies into creating more adventures which can be used (Hoard of the Dragon Queen - from what I have read so far - is a pretty good start, and with solidified rules, the standard can only get better).

What I would really like, however, is a set of guidelines for setting such adventures into any of the existing campaign settings. We'll assume that Forgotten Realms is the default (as it has been so far), then WotC could put out a web enhancement placing the adventures in Greyhawk or Dark Sun or Dragonlance - which ever of the worlds D&D has embraced over the years and players would want to enjoy.

I've never bought one, with the sole exception of Dragonlance Adventures for 1E.

I think settings introduced as adventures or adventure paths are what would appeal to me.
 


Probably it's not necessary, but I need a 5th edition Forgotten Realms campaign setting after the disaster of the Spellplague and 4E in general, or I could die :(

In the same way that Golarion was shown, bit by bit, in the early Pathfinder AP's? It's a strategy which has seemed to work for Paizo.

Nah. I'd rather switch to a new setting with a new AP. Keeps it fresh. Players play a campaign in a different setting each year. Great way to bring back old iconic settings or introduce new ones.

Although I probably won't die from it, this. It's all well and good if you're running the Sword Coast and maybe Phlan (for those with OP ties), but it's pretty difficult to know what's up in other parts of the world without a new version of the setting book.

Aside from the Realms, I'd like them to do one classic setting book a year. Either an all-in-one or a player and DM book, comprehensive but outsourced, and that's it. No additional books in the line, just details on how to convert classic PDFs for further details. Start with the ones that had minimal love in recent editions: Mystara, Birthright, Spelljammer and Planescape, and work from there.

Once they're ready to move OP away from the Realms, then a brand new in-house designed setting might be in order.
 

If I recall properly, WotC is going to take it slow on releasing a lot of books.
Perhaps they'll not worry about game worlds just yet and rather give players and DM's options before releasing any game worlds.
Game worlds sell to just those who are interested in the kind of world.
While option books, like a PHB2, will probably sell to a larger percentage.
 

Personally I wouldn't mind an updated Greyhawk campaign book, in HB. The last one was actually for Living Greyhawk and was an SC.
