D&D 5E What's the 5E plan?

My supposition is that the future will open up once the DMG is printed and out the door. Until then, it's DMG, DMG, DMG in the WotC offices.

Oh, and there is the lawsuit over the movie, with two studies fighting to make it. So I guess we will get another one of those.

I am sure it will be great.

I really hope they never do this. I hated 90% of the 3.x material and felt it detracted from the edition. I hope they continue with their current methodology of specific licenses for specific content. I just hope they also reign in the quality controls on it, much like how Apple do with their iOS apps.

You're thinking game stuff. I am not. I am talking brand licensing. You know, pajamas, lunch boxes, hats, t-shirts, toys, napkins, whatever....

Mearls said in an interview somewhere that they want all of their releases to be big events. The buildup, the anticipation that rises when folks know something is coming but aren't quite sure what it is yet, I'm sure this is what they are going for in the future. Then they can tease it out as long as they want. Instead of showing you their hand, they're going to keep everything close to have that upper hand. It's a smart business move, even with all of the complaints that it's not. If WotC told everyone exactly what they were going to do for the next year or two then it would be a flash in the pan. Instead they can drag it along and keep the attention of their customers. This thread is proof that the plan is working.

I think halfling rogue might be right on what WOTC's PR strategy seems to be. However....
I'm not sure secrecy is the way to go, especially since this "silent" period now follows up a period of fan goodwill and relatively open communication during the playtest period.
There's a disconnect there that if they are not careful may lead them back down the road that led to the 4E mistakes.

And I should point out, limiting information and keeping secrets is not the only way to spark interest. It does, sometimes, but it can easily back-fire and cause suspicion and ill feeling.

How does not announcing a product that doesn't exist a year before it possibly can exist be considered "keeping secrets"? They've already announced what they're releasing and doing in the next six months. Since when is it necessary that we know their release schedule years in advance?

Thank dog: I don't believe I said they should announce things years in advance.

They can talk alot about their plans, etc. without having to talk concretes on individual products.

Clearly you are referring to spellcasting soda!

Then I'm not quite sure what your complaint is.

its good to have a thread like this every few days.

Yes, they have been quite. They have confirmed

  • Dungeonscape digital tools, coming soon
  • Elemental Evil adventure and related splat book with Sasquatch Studios, in March
  • D&D attack wing with Wizkids, coming soon
  • GaleForce 9 accessories, any day now

We actually don't know if there will be:

  • A FR setting or another setting book
  • PDFs or how online content in dungeonscape will be handled
  • Any sort of Dungeon or Dragon mag or online content
  • Any sort of book beyond the core, I mean any, that isn't "story" linked
  • An OGL/GSL/D20L type arrangement
  • Other board games (one is rumored) or other RPGS
  • Other digital products, games (though I am sure there are things cooking)

I expected an anouncement at Gencon....now two months later...I sure they will tell us something, at some point.
As you can see, there's already a lot of things on the horizon and rumours to discuss. What more do you want of you don't want concrete information?
