Need Help with a 5e D&D Conversion!

Ok, so I have a player that really wants to somehow do Mystic Theurge in 5e and I am at a total loss on how to accomplish this.

I have considered trying to make it some bizarre new base class where you get the spell progression where you get access to the spells up through 7th level spells (where your spell progression would have ended with the PrC in 3.5) for both classes but after that you just get new spell slots. d6 HD, no armor, simple weapons, etc. I have no idea what to give it for class features and on that same note I am feeling like adding class features might be too strong.... maybe something where you get to choose a class feature from one of the two classes your melding with certain restrictions every so many levels?

Right now if you did straight multiclass with 10 levels in each class best your going to get access to is 5th level spells in each class and of course your going to have all the features for those classes up to that level.

Any thoughts on this?

Mythic Theurge was a glaring patch class. It won't be missed. Also, you need to re-read the multiclassing rules of 5e, they are now fairly forgiving for caster multiclasses.

The new rules seem good for a multiclass caster the only hitch is as I read it, when you prepare spells you are still restricted by your class level in that class as to what level of spells you can prepare. Mystic Theurge allowed you to get to learn 7th level spells rather than only making it to 5th level spells.

Suppose I could create a feat that allows a multi class caster of X levels in each class gain access to the next higher tier of spells, do that twice and it works out the same as a brand new class then. Make sure the feats only allow access to the 6th and 7th level spells.

I agree I dont think Mythic Theurge is a needed class with how multiclassing works now.

You could look at Feats to add some multiclass wizard cleric love, but just need to make sure it isnt broke.

Maybe try the cleric with the knowledge domain. Houserule it to give him/her access to a few arcane spells, or maybe one school, of his/her choice.

I don't know if you are open to Homebrew material, but I did a Magic Domain that might work for you.

Otherwise I agree with former posts that simply multiclassing will work, though you won't get 7th level spells in both classes, which personally I find a good restriction as Mystic Theurge was widely considered the prime example of casters breaking the game. If the player is absolutely set on 7th level spells, pick which class is dominant and do a 13/7 split for the 'end game' build.
