D&D 5E There's something surprising I miss about 4th edition and it's not what you think.

The white background to the rule book did make it easier on the eyes, if a bit boring. 3E's background "lined paper" was probably the worst presentation for a rulebook I've seen.

Not much for digest-sized books myself; they're harder to store on my shelves amid the larger hardbacks and such.

See that's so funny because I loved 3e's background make it feel.... tome-y. I think 5e's is a good compromise. Infact I really like 5e's pages they remind me of a fairy tale book that you would always see in old cartoons. I guess the art helps with it as well. And as far as the digest books being hard to store, I just think you need more digest books! haha. I have a little section of them in my shelves. Now what's a pain to store is Eoris rpg.

I liked the content in Essentials but I disliked the digest format. But I prefer digest format much more than boxed sets.

(I miss at-wills. To me they made combats more interesting and didn't have the versimilitude breaking issue of martial encounter and daily powers. [Although I have no qualms against martial encounter and daily powers.])

I liked the format of stat blocks in 4E

Seconded. I especially liked that everything I needed to run a monster was present, with no looking up spells in a separate book. As far as presentation goes, it's what I miss the most; not doing it seems lazy to me.

I think Pathfinder pulled off the tome-y look a lot better (and far more readable).

I do have one shelf that has 5th age, the compiled Van Richten's books, Spell and Magic item compendiums, Joshua's almanacs (for Mystara) and Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog, all of which are digest size. ... but it breaks my 1e, 2e, 3e, 4e and 5e hardback shelf by having the digests there. . And i'd happily trade the digest books for 8 1/2 x 11 copies (Which I actually did with my Robotech and Savage World books)
