In its first week, the Legendary Planet Kickstarter has raised over $30,000, unlocking over 400 pages of adventures and bonus material. A full-scale adventure path for Pathfinder and 5th Edition, LEGENDARY PLANET features some of the best names in the industry, taking characters from 1st level to 20th and beyond!

The Assimilation Strain by Neil Spicer and Tom Phillips - a 40-page prequel adventure taking characters from humble origins on a typical fantasy world and drawing them into a web of interplanetary intrigue and adventure

The core adventures begin next, each one nearly 100 pages, including a detailed adventure, bonus bestiary, planetary gazetteer, and supplemental articles, as well as a 7-part fiction saga by award-winning author Chris A. Jackson.

Already unlocked are:

To Worlds Unknown by Jim Groves - an interplanetary prison break and investigation of a crossroads world on the galactic frontier
The Scavenged Codex by Mike Shel - a postapocalyptic planet where the lost knowledge of the ancients lies waiting to be discovered
Dead Vault Descent by Matt Goodall - a tidally locked planet riddled with colossal catacombs, where the dead guard secrets you must reclaim
Confederates of the Shattered Zone by Richard Pett - a shattered world of asteroid mines, where danger lurks between the clashing rocks

Coming soon, we'll be unlocking:

The Depths of Desperation by Steven T. Helt - a water-world inhabited by a cunning race intent on conquest and control
Mind Tyrants of the Merciless Moons by Tim Hitchcock - the wandering moons of a gas giant, where the elder races cultivated their psychic seed
To Kill a Star by Jason Nelson - an enormous Dyson sphere tapping the power of a fading sun, where the dark powers of the universe seek apotheosis to rule the stars

We just passed the $30,000 barrier, which means we have unlocked a bonus bestiary of interplanetary enemies to accompany Confederates of the Shattered Zone! Onward to the planetary gazetteer and more!

I'll admit. I'm sorely tempted by this, but I have a few questions. Based on the previews, it seems like there will be a fair amount of additional player content (half construct, reptile, four-armed alien, and plant races at least and I'm assuming there will be more like weapons). Where and when will that content appear? I'm interested in the path for 5E. With that in mind, how much are you needing to add to the ruleset to get your desired setting/genre? Is it as simple as a few new races and using the stats for future weapons in the DMG or do you have a special ruleset for space ships, future tech, and similar as well? If you are developing additional rules, where and when will that content appear? Is the 12 pages of undesignated material per adventure set aside for this kind of stuff? If you are planning new rules content (races, weapons, feats, or similar), is there any way to know what kind of scope you are looking at for this path (how many of the various bits)?

I'm sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance for your time answering them. I wish you all the best with the Kickstarter. It looks great.

I have the same questions as Matthan, especially because I'm interested in the path for 5th Edition. This material I guess, will expand what is currently in the DMG regarding Races/Classes Creation and more options for Weapons and Armors that's right?

Hi Matthan,

Thanks for your questions. Let's see if I can address them for you:

1. The majority of each project is the adventure itself, including locations, maps, encounters, new magic items, key NPC stat blocks, etc.

2. There will be a section of new monsters for each adventure for which we unlock the bestiary section. These monsters will have their own stat blocks and descriptive text and can be used in this campaign or elsewhere just as you'd use any monster.

3. There will be a descriptive gazetteer of each planet and location, areas of interest, adventure hooks, etc.

4. The additional support articles will vary in content from book to book. I believe the article on playable races is slated to appear in the first adventure, along with an article on religion and deities of the setting. Others may detail new character options like spells or feats or tweaked versions of existing classes. I know we have an article on weapons and armor in the works already. We should have a more comprehensive list of those articles in the next week or two.

5. The "sword and planet" concept is much more similar to John Carter of Mars and similar pulp adventures from the 1920s-1940s. It's essentially a fantasy-based adventure set on other planets. There certainly will be some amount of technology, but things like ray guns and force fields will be similar in commonality to magic items, which also exist in the setting, and some things will be both magical and technological at the same time. Something like Flash Gordon would be at the upper end of the tech level you'd see. There will be robots in places and giant alien machines of incomprehensible design and some personal technological devices, but technology is an accent to the setting rather than its defining characteristic.

6. The action of the adventures is focused on exotic planets and alien cultures, not on spaceships and hyperspace and the like. Travel from planet to planet is by a network of stargate-type portals of limited size and ancient alien manufacture, but the seting assumption is that spaceships as you'd think of them in Star Trek or Star Wars just don't exist, or at best are exceptionally rare. In a universe with stargates and magic, the impetus to develop that technology just never really progressed (much like the rationale for why firearms are generally rare or nonexistent in fantasy RPGs - who needs to invent guns when you have magic wands?).

7. The page counts we list on the Kickstarter page should give you a good estimate of of how much content you'll be seeing in each part of each book, though it's certainly possible there will be variation in final page count between the 5th Ed version of these adventures and the Pathfinder versions we are also creating, since stat blocks are so much bigger in Pathfinder. We'll be previewing more samples of our upcoming expansion articles a little later on during our Kickstarter campaign, so you'll be able to see more specifics about what we've got coming your way.

Hopefully that gives you a clearer picture, but let me know if you have further questions and thanks for the kind words about the project. We are very excited about this project and think it is going to be a lot of fun. Help spread the word!

ANOTHER stretch goal has fallen! Check out the latest Kickstarter update for Legendary Planet!

Thanks to the generous support of marvelous Martin Hansen Lontjern pushing us over the $32,000 mark, we have blasted through yet another bonus goal, adding a fantastic 10-page gazetteer for Confederates of the Shattered Zone by Richard Pett, detailing the blasted remnants of the asteroid belt itself, its mining colonies, and the surrounding solar system, with the able assistance of Savior of the Universe Henry Wong and a Prince of the Universe yet unnamed! If you've back at that level and haven't claimed a star system yet, hop on board with the esteemed Master Pett and let your fantastic flag fly!

The final stretch goal for Confederates of the Shattered Zone is now in view, 12 pages of bonus articles (including the latest installment of Chris A. Jackson's interplanetary romp) unlocked at $34,000, and then at $36,000 another entire 64-page adventure (bringing us up to 500 PAGES!), Steven T. Helt's awesome aquatic adventure, The Depths of Desolation!

After a rip-roaring start, Legendary Planet has settled into a mellow middle phase of slow growth. This is pretty standard, and with almost 4 weeks left in our project we are still very pleased with our progress and look forward to a fast finish. Our mythic Kickstarter added almost 1/3 of its backers and dollars in the last four days! Right now, keep spreading the word among your friends and gamer acquaintances, in person and on social media, and when you see Legendary Planet pop up on your feed make sure to like, share, +1, retweet, etc., to keep boosting the signal. Also, if you've got a suggestion for an area to share the news about Legendary Planet, let us know!

As a final note, please check out the Legendary Games website this week for our annual July sale, celebrating our relaunch in 2012. Blast off for savings from tomorrow through the 4th of July and get some amazing deals at the Legendary Games webstore!

Looks interesting.

I am kind of surprised by the number of people pledging $400 so they can name a star system or the like.

I get the bestiary and the gazeteer. But what type of content will be in the "12 pages of bonus material"?

Some Kickstarter backers really like being involved, or want special stuff

That's probably the best answer to why they are willing to pledge larger amounts. Having some say in the final shape of a project, or inserting a favorite bit of something as a personal Easter egg, or getting to work with pro designers to create new creatures or characters, that can be very appealing to some and uninteresting to others.

That said, backers at that level also get some more tangible rewards, in addition to contributing to designing the star system or an organization on the planet, including:
- Premium print copy with a unique personalized cover
- Art prints of the cover art for each adventure plus the compilation
- Limited edition T-shirt with compilation cover art
- LG dice
- Name listed in the compilation along with their special title
