Dark Days in Sion - Act 2: Scene 2

Bill attempts to break the grapple! (Roll: 19, I'm hoping that made it!)
If I am free of the grapple, I step one square away into the spot you mentioned, with 75% cover.
At that point, I take a swing at the nearest adjacent hound, trying to clip his legs, as before. (Roll: 9, miss. Rats!)

(Bill's new initiative: 13.)

[The bite that landed in the gut: the steel breastplate didn't absorb any of that damage? Just wondering.]

If the hounds attack beat your AC it also means its fangs managed to penetrate your armor and deal full damage. in D&D your AC represents more than just hitting you, it also represents your armors ability to absorb/deflect damage. That's why there's flat footed AC, touch AC, etc. to differentiate the difference between what gets through your armor and what doesn't. Nice try though ;)

Hound #3: (Grapple Check to resist Billanverthorne, DC 19: = 15, Fail)

With a mighty heave you throw Hound #3 off your arm which goes sprawling with a painful yelp.

Billanverthorne: (Fate Pool Grapple Check to throw off Hound #1: = 23)

Hound #1: (Grapple check to resist Billanverthorne, DC 23: = 23, Succeeds)

Unfortunately you are not able to throw off Hound #1 so easily, and thus cannot move from your current spot without making another opposed grapple check first.

Bill, trying to regain control...

Bill will try to break Hound 1's grapple. (Roll: 22... Does that succeed?)

(If that succeeds, Bill will cast a spell. Spell failure = 25%. Roll: 85, no failure.)

(Spell damage: Hound #3 will take two points energy damage. Hound # 1 will take 4 points of energy damage.)

Bill growls, "Today is a good day to die!!"

Fiendish Hound #1: (Opposed Grapple Check, DC 22: = 8, Fail)

This time you succeed in throwing off Hound #1 and cast two magic missiles, one at each hound. (I'll be generous and say you don't provoke attacks of opportunity from the hounds because they are off balance) Hound #3 is reduced to 0 hp's, barely conscious. Hound #1 however is still very much alive.

Hobgoblin Scout: Lowers his hood to better his aim before he lets an arrow fly from his composite longbow and moves closer. (Longbow Attack: = 16, Miss)(Moves 30 ft. Closer)

You hear the thrum of a heavy sheaf arrow fly past you and recognize the new assailant as a Hobgoblin. Meanwhile Hound #1 recovers his footing and lunges back to bite at you again.

Fiendish Hound #1: (Bite Attack: = 4, Possible Fumble)(Fumble Check: = 8, Fumble!)(Provokes Attack of Opportunity)

Billanverthorne: The Hound slips and stumbles, giving you an attack of opportunity before the end of the round. After you make your attack of opportunity, go ahead and act for the start of round 6.

Kryslogious of Anasteria

Kryslogious had to think quickly, whatever dropped the Keu must be still present. Hearing it mention his masters name only made the matter more urgent.

"Alic cut it free and get it back to your father immediately!" he delegated quickly shifting his head back and fourth listening and looking for anything in the sky.

[listen check=14]
[spot check=7]

He knew Malic would have the skill in protecting the Keu and decided to put his faith in the two dwarves. He then called out to the four people in the distance. "Help! We need a healer, someone has been hurt!"

Defender of Oerth
Billanverthorne: Never give up! Never surrender!

Bill takes advantage of the hound's mistake, and brings his sword down hard on the evil beast!
(Rolls: To-Hit: 19, Hit Location: 7 [Right Leg], Damage: 11 points.)

Bill grins with satisfaction. "Aww, poor doggy."

[That takes care of the attack of opportunity. What Bill does next depends on whether or not Hound #1 is still up.]

[Scenario One: Hound #1 is still up... Attack with Greatsword: To-hit roll: 20! [Total:25] Confirm: 15! [Total:20]... Critical hit to Hound #1, damage = 13 points.]

[Scenario Two: Hound #1 is down... Cast my last magic missile spell at the Hobgoblin Scout: damage = 6 points.]

No matter which scenario plays out, Bill will use his move action to pick up his bow, and then take a one-step adjustment back to the place where there's cover. Then he'll drop his sword (free action) in the square he's taking cover in.

EDIT: [Oh, by the way, Bill glances back down at his sister for a moment... what's that last hound doing?]

Alic, Bax, Kryslogious, Malic, Ordechai, Wrenwil

Alic steps beside you and stares at the wounded Keu.

Alic: "Did it just say Wrenwil?!" He asks with obvious confusion.

Kryslogious said:
"Alic cut it free and get it back to your father immediately!" he delegated quickly shifting his head back and fourth listening and looking for anything in the sky.

[listen check=14]
[spot check=7]

He knew Malic would have the skill in protecting the Keu and decided to put his faith in the two dwarves. He then called out to the four people in the distance. "Help! We need a healer, someone has been hurt!"

As light is fading fast, and you are without low-light vision to begin with, you are at a severe disadvantage to spot anything in the sky. Your listen check reveals the voices of the slavers and the katanese warriors from the other camp who move just within 30 ft of you and the Keu.

Slaver 1: -Speaking common in a rude tone- "What new disturbance is this?! Keep your troubles away from our camp tin-man!."

Slaver 2: -Also speaking common rudely- "My partner speaks truth. Do not ask us for healing!"

Alic: Kneels beside the Keu meanwhile and pulls a dagger to cut the net before he shouts back at the slavers. "Begone than if you have no assistance to offer!" (Spot Check: = 17, Success, is not caught flat-footed)

Alic suddenly ducks as a Vul hunter dives and claws at his neck with its talons!

Vul Hunter: (Hide Check: = 14)(Dive Attack with Talons: = 19. Hit)(Location: Shoulder)(Damage: = 6)

Alic roars with pain as the Vul's talons narrowly miss his throat, leaving a deep scar through his armor and a jagged tear in his shoulder! The Vul shrieks loudly with a frustrated tone, as though disappointed it didn't kill the dwarf outright, and quickly soars back up into the air over the heads of the slavers who quickly dive for cover.

One of the katanese warriors however (wielding a longspear) instinctively strikes at the Vul attempting to defend himself!

Katanese Warrior: (Jab with longspear: = 8, Miss)

Having been taken by surprise Kryslogious you could not react to help Alic, but you are able to at least get a good glimpse of the creature who wounded him. You know instinctively this must be one of those winged beings who rule Vulkh that Alic warned you about earlier.

The Vul roughly resembles a large bipedal vulture with arms in addition to its wings. It would stand between 6-8 feet tall with a head and neck covered by tough mottled hide lacking feathers. Rough, armored scales covers its lower arms and legs that end in four talon-ed fingers and toes. Its wingspan is about thrice its height with large hooked grasping claws at the elbows of its wings.

Its bony skull features a singular large nostril opening while it's beaks appears very sharp and powerful. Its hide and feathers are drab earthy shades well suited for camouflage. Perhaps most raptor-like about the Vul are its eyes which reflect the dim light of your campfire brightly with an eerie glow.

You also note it wears hide vest of some sort and has several pouches on its person in addition to a bone-handled knife on its belt. In its hands it grasps a long spear which should easily do much more damage than its talons, fortunately for Alic that it didn't do so.

[Wrenwill: You, Malic and Ordechai hear Alics shout and glimpse the Vul hunters attack. Kryslogious & Wrenwil: What do you do? Neither of you can target the Vul with a ranged weapon so long as it remains aloft without low light vision.]

Wrenwil

A grunt of disappointment and frustration fell from Wrenwil's lips when he heard the call for help.

He looked to Ordechai a moment, "we've got company, safety in numbers, shall we?". Without further ado, the old cleric made his way to the scene of the disturbance. His eyes were locked to the heavens, a light crossbow tight in his grasp.

Hound #1 also falls to your blade.

[Scenario Two: Hound #1 is down... Cast my last magic missile spell at the Hobgoblin Scout: damage = 6 points.]

The scout cringes and roars with anger at the pain of your spell.

EDIT: [Oh, by the way, Bill glances back down at his sister for a moment... what's that last hound doing?]

To your horror the only sign of your sister and the fourth hound is a large blood smear on the earth where she was apparently silenced and dragged away into the darkness less than a minute since you last laid eyes on them.

Hobgoblin Scout: Raises his bow again to fire another arrow but pauses, glances in the direction you came from and breaks off running into the darkness. (3x move because of terrain)

It is then you notice the sound of hoof beats and several torches held high by riders approaching from camp.

[Billanverthorne: What do you do?]

Ordechai: Spits out his ale and clutches at your sleeve with his good hand. "Don't be so hasty my friend!" he exclaims. "Did you not glimpse what descended from the sky just now?! That was a Vul! One does not simply stroll into combat with the likes of them! Who knows how many of them are circling above us, watching, assessing which of us are a threat. Whoever rushes to Alic's aid may well be their next target!" He warns.

"...So let us be calm, let us move slow and be smart. There's a heavy crossbow hidden among my goods that someone paid me to smuggle into Vulkh. That'll have a much better chance against a Vul than your puny light crossbow does... however I need your help to unpack and assemble it because three hands are better than one." He says with a smirk. "Bax will keep an eye out for us, what do you say?"

[Wrenwill: What do you do?]

Ersun

He strikes at Worgo as he attempts to retrieve his weapon and then continues to follow up the attack. Once he nicked at Worgo he takes a step backwards behind Ania, hoping to draw the thug with the flail in front of Worgo to bunch them together and make them unable to flank him. It is not a chivalrous move regarding Ania, but if Worgo joins the fight with his glaive he can reach through towards Ersun anyway, and considering he provoked him the most, he figures Ania will be less focused on anyway.

[AAO, Worgo: 22 to hit, 15 damage]
[Attack, Worgo: 13 to hit, 8 damage]
[5 feet move backwards: on/towards the portal text]
