3.0 Demons

Demonic Doudou

First Post
Hi,

I'm running a 3.0 adventure from Dungeon Magazine without 3rd edition monster manual. I have the 3.5 version in hand but Vrock and Balor seem to be different between 3.0 and 3.5. In 3.5, Balor is a CR 20 creature, but my scenario is for 16th level players, so it makes me doubt that the older version is nerfed. It will be appreciated if someone can post the stats of this 2 creatures in 3.0.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you very much for your quick answer.

For future reference, the 3.0 System Reference Document contains full stats for both those monsters and a whole lot of others plus the core rules.

I couldn't find the 3.0 SRD on wizards.com, but it's easy enough to get it from another Open Gaming License site. i.e. the Open Gaming Foundation or the System Reference Documents Organization.

You can still get the 3.5 SRD on wizard.com here and there are many alternative format versions out there on the internet, such as HTML and PDF versions.

Beware many of the demons and devils had drastic changes (mostly huge upgrades) between 3.0e to 3.5e. Simply replacing 3.0e fiends to the same-named fiends in 3.5e can ends up over-kill. Once when a friend of my running Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, he just replaced 3.0e Honed Devil to 3.5e Honed Devil. Those are two completely different beasts and the PC party was almost unable to harm it.

I have to take the CR change into consideration. Imagine a 3.5 Balor who is summoning another Balor in the first round... Two CR 20 for my 16th party. Ouch! In bonus, if they don't get rid of my other villains during the course of the adventure, they will all be part of the final fight... a bloody fight.

The solution is to play just one Balor, overconfident, so he will not summon an aid. Just 1 CR 20 is supposed to worth 2 CR 18.
