D&D 5E Dispel Magic & Spellcasting Ability Check

Jack of all trades specifically says "add half your proficiency to any ability check that does not already add your proficiency bonus." So, if Dispel magic does not include proficiency bonus, it is affected by Jack of all trades.

EDIT: Guidance also does apply, since it works on "Ability Checks", and dispel magic says "Make an ability check"
As a DM I wouldn't allow it, because it's not using a skill like making an arcana check for knowledge, it's your magical might vs the spell's resistance.

Also, that's saying a bard is better at magic than a wizard, and that's no bueno

It's fine to not allow it, any DM is allowed to run their game however they like. I was just letting the poster know that Jack of All Trades would work according to the stock rules, along with the Guidance cantrip.

That's fine, I was just quoting the RAW. No one should be a slave to it, but it is usually best to know it, in case you (you meaning the OP, not you specifically) want to stick with RAW rather than house rule it. Enjoy running it however pleases you and your group. :)

Oh this is where the title goes?

Just curious then, would you also disallow JoAT on initiative checks?

JoAT only works on basic stat checks, baseline skills, and tool proficiencies. It does not include: attacks, saving throws, or anything that does not normally get a proficiency bonus.

Which by RAW covers initiative and dispell magic checks as confirmed by Sage

What is the difference between a basic stat check and a stat check to which your prof bonus doesn't apply?

There are a few types of "stay checks". The main three, IIRC, are Attacks, Ability checks, and Saving throws. None of them include your proficiency by default. You need "extra" things to include your proficiency to any of them.

For example a Wizard is allowed to swing a Great sword, he just would not include his proficiency. He would do a "stat check" by rolling and adding his strength, while a Fighter would also get to add his proficiency.

An ability check, by default, does not include your proficiency. However, by RAW, anything that says it adds to an ability check does so, from Acrobatics/Athletics, to Initiative, to Dispel magic. That is why Jack of all Trades applies here, by RAW.
