D&D 5E New to D&D. Warlock - Sorcerer Multiclass

Ok! Thanks Sorceres Apprentice... Then I have to use the warlock spell pact mechanics for it's spells. And I use the sorcerers spell slot table for the sorcerers spells.I also have to use the sorcerers slots to cast warlock spells. Which means that I can't use more spells per day than a ordinary sorcerer... Is that correct?

Like this?
Well, you can use slots from one class to cast spells from the other class. When you are level 8, say, then you will have two level-2 pact magic slots (that renew every rest) and 9 spellcasting slots (4 at level 1, 3 at level 2, 2 at level 3) that renew daily. But you can cast a warlock spell like hex using one of your spellcasting slots, and a sorcerer spell like magic missile using a pact magic slot.

So I run a Sorcerer/Warlock multiclass in one of my games, and love the way the classes reinforce each other. As to your question, you can cast any sorcerer spell using a warlock slot and any warlock spell using a sorcerer slot. Because of the different mechanics for regaining those slots, I notate like this

1st level 4s
2nd level 3s/2w
3rd level 2s

So it's only 2nd level currently where I have to worry about if I'm spending a sorcerer slot or a warlock slot. When I cast a spell of that level, I notate which type of slot I am using. Of course, I always use warlock slots first since I recharge those on a short rest. That includes when I break down slots for sorcery points. Be sure to always top off your sorcery points using any remaining warlock slots before a short rest.

Good luck and have fun! And don't worry too much, 5e is a very forgiving game so feel free to experiment and pick what you like. My Gnome SorLock just bumped up to a 16 Cha at 9th level and I haven't had any issues keeping up with the rest of the group in combat.

Lethol, I think you would benefit from some play experience. Maybe I could run an online game during the holidays using Roll20. maybe a couple of quick adventures or a fight club so you get your feet wet. Just wait a couple of weeks.

Hello! Thank you Obi! How many levels did you level up you sorcerer before you decided to multclass. I am thinking about taking 3 warlock levels. I think I will take the pact of chain, but the pact of the book is tempting. What do you suggest? I am also thinking about taking the pact of the fiend. Scorching ray seems to be a great spell. But the pact of the old one is also tempting.
It will only be possible for me to cast level 1 and means that it will be a limited number of spells:
2 warlock cantrips
3 warlock spells and
2 invocations.

Is that correct?

What happens with the warlock spells slot level, will they level up to level 5? Or do they stay at level 2? Will the spellslots increase until they are 4, or will they stay 2 as they were when I did level up the warlock levels?

Which pact do you think is the most useful for a SorLock (or warlock), the pact of the fiend or the old one? Can I also have Draconic bloodline? Will I have the features from both the classes? Like draconic resilience and elemental affinity?

What do you think is the advantages for being a SorLock instead of going singleclass sorcerer? What do you think of the disadvantages?

Thanks!

Hi Lethol, first up, let me suggested that you don't spend too much time thinking about how you will build your character 3, 4 or more levels down the line. It's certainly good to have a general direction of where you would like to go, but the campaign can shape how you want to evolve your character, and I highly recommend allowing it.

For myself, I was a 4th level Forest Gnome Sorcerer who had taken Tavern Brawler as my 4th level Feat for ABI, partially because I kept getting into bar fights, partially because my character had a short man complex, and partially because I wanted to bump up his 13 Con to 14 to get the +2. He began speaking to small beasts in the woods, asking for help in scouting ahead, and at some point the DM had one of them answer me. Turned out to be a powerful archfey who asked if I wanted the secrets to Fey power. I accepted, and at 5th level took my first Warlock level with pact of the ArchFey. From there I took 3 Warlock levels and took pact of the Chain, and bonded with an annoying sprite named Joy as my familiar. I then bounced back to Sorcerer to get 3rd level spells, and most recently back to Warlock to get my 2nd ABI (and finally get my Cha to 16). In combat, I primarily buff the party through Twin Enlarge or Twin Haste, then get as far away from danger as possible and Eldrich Blast away.

As for what abilities you get. You get everything for the level you are in each class. So look to the sorcerer cantrips known, spells know and spells per day and add that to the warlock cantrips known, invocations known, spells known and spell slots. You get it all!

And for what you should do? Do what you want! As long as you have at least a +2 in Charisma, you are meeting the base assumption of the game for combat effectiveness. For everything else, choose what you think is cool or makes a good character or will help your group. The one big disadvantage of multiclassing is delaying access to the higher power levels, and with casters, that means you'll be behind the curve in terms of what level spells you can cast (like in my example where I didn't get access to Fireball until my 8th character level, whereas a straight sorcerer would have gotten it at 5th). The biggest advantage is the increased flexibility and wider skill set.

Hope that helps! No matter what you choose, I hope you have a great time and become a lifelong player!
