Unless like in "Time Bandits" concentrated evil is a thing in your campaign, in which case things or races could be tainted.

Sure, but, that's basically demon possession in a different hat, isn't it? Which would be a huge change to a race that has never been that, even for a DM using them as monsters only.

I look at it more like radioactive material than possession, but you are correct about the change to the race.

Lol no. That's like saying that dwarves are humanoids carved out individually of stone by Moradin, instead of natural born descendants of the first dwarves, who were create from cstone and given life by Moradin.

Pretty signifigent difference. Only in 5e is a gnoll a hyena that has been turned into a demonic monstrosity by a heyena demon. Before 5e, their origin is pretty much the same as teiflings.

I think that for me the Demon Gnoll issue is closer to the Eladrin Elf end of the spectrum then the Salamander Slavery end.

If you consider material produced during the 2e period then you must remember to factor in the "Satanic Panic" over reaction that occurred in TSR. I mean unless you believe that there were actually no Demons or Devils in 2e DnD then you can see how "Slaves" could have bee white-washed into "Servants" to fool the feeble minded anti-DnD crowd.

Wouldn't it make more sense for a hyena-demon to turn humans into gnolls, leaving the turning of hyenas into gnolls to the hideously bipedal/hairless/tool-using human-demons?

go far enough back and their origin involved a gnome & a troll...

... just in case anyone was harboring the misconception that this game was originally serious...

But in 4e they are also extraplanar creatures of a CG bent...[/indent]

Nope. In 4e, there's no such thing as "Chaotic Good", not if you go by the official (and only) alignments available to you in the books; If you are good-aligned, you must either be Lawful Good or just Good. If you are Chaotic, you are automatically Chaotic Evil, because that's the only alignment in 4e with the word "Chaotic" in it. Likewise, there is no "Lawful Evil" in 4e; if you are Lawful, you must be Lawful Good, because that is the only alignment with the word "Lawful" in it. Which is ridiculous.
