Wouldn't it make more sense for a hyena-demon to turn humans into gnolls, leaving the turning of hyenas into gnolls to the hideously bipedal/hairless/tool-using human-demons?in 5e is a gnoll a hyena that has been turned into a demonic monstrosity by a heyena demon.
go far enough back and their origin involved a gnome & a troll...Before 5e, their origin is pretty much the same as teiflings.
But in 4e they are also extraplanar creatures of a CG bent...[/indent]
