D&D 5E Lich Phylactery

You can only have 1 clone active at a time

This poses no problem to my plan.

Wizard makes clone that is inactive. Wizard turns himself into lich, which then (maybe?) activates clone. Clone makes other clone that is inactive. Clone turns self into lich, which activates other clone. At no time are two clones active at the same time. Rinse, repeat, world domination.

Not sure how there are 2 active...
You only have 1 soul that is the activating ingredient.
Turning yourself into a Lich activates the Phylactery... not the other clone...
Although, one that happens, your soul has a choice on where to go: the Phylactery or the Clone.

How are 2 clones active?

What a buzzkill. You're really quashing my dreams of world domination. [emoji12]

This isn't really a rules question, it's a plot device. :)

The scenarios I proposed in the other thread:

A) The lich's soul has been permanently tainted by the transformation into Lichdom. If his phylactery is destroyed, he transfers to one of his clones, but the clone immediately dies and transforms into a Lich. They are basically backup phylacteries.

B) The lich's soul has been permanently bound to the phylactery and is destroyed when the phylactery is destroyed. The clones activate, but are soullless creatures, ripe for possession by any number of spirits or extra planer creatures. You could end up with multiple clones of the pre-lich wizard wandering around, with different alignments, different goals, and different memories.

... I also ran into another bump..
A Lich isn't 'alive' so he would have to cast Clone as a younger handsome fella...
Even then, I'm getting that his soul is put in the Phylactery and won't make it to the clone :-(

1. If a Lich has a Clone and a Phylactery, does he get to choose where he goes if he is slain?

No. The soul can only go to a clone if it is FREE and willing. Willing or not, the lich's soul is bound to the phylactery.

2. If a Lich is slain after he returns from the Phylactery, can he then inhabit a Clone?

No. When he returns from the phylactery, it is directly to another undead body and the lich is no longer dead. Plus his soul is still not free to go anywhere but the phylactery.

3. If the Phylactery is destroyed, can the Lich then inhabit the Clone?
No. The lich doesn't die if the phylactery is destroyed. He already died to get there and hasn't return to undeath yet. There's no deatg trigger to allow the lich to go to the clone.

Remember, this is for an NPC. NPC's don't use the same rules as PC's. They use plot devices and personalized versions of spells and magic items. Plus the Rule of Cool.

I only get strict about NPC's following the same rules when they are using items or spells the PC's will be able to get their hands on.
