You can with thrown weapons. They are Melee Ranged Attacks. Spell only specifies melee. Handaxe for example.
The spell in question specifies "melee attack with a weapon", so you can not throw a weapon and satisfied the spell's requirements (and there is no such thing as "Melee Ranged Attacks", though there is such a thing as a Ranged Weapon Attack made using a melee weapon, which is what happens when someone throws a melee weapon). You can with thrown weapons. That's a thing I didn't realize was true until you said it. Thought that bit only applied to ranged spell attacks like the second bullet point. The Spell Sniper feat lets you double the range of cantrips with attack rolls, so that will extend the range of Booming Blade to 10 feet.

I hadn't really thought about it until this thread. Now I want to play a halberd wielding tempest cleric who uses Booming Blade for extra thunder damage on every hit![]()
Problem is that the spell has a range of 5 feet. If you throw the weapon farther than that, it's beyond the range of the spell and the spell would fizzle. Not even going into the issues with "Melee Ranged Attack", which isn't a thing as far as I know. (A Ranged Weapon Attack with a melee weapon is a thing.)

While it's a bit feat intensive this can get especially nasty with the addition of Polearm Master and Warcaster. As a monster approaches and enters your reach you now get to use your opportunity attack to hit him with Booming Blade, forcing the choice between staying put or closing the distance and taking the extra damage. Additionally, if you can get your hands on a magical polearm that happens to deal a little extra lightning damage... well now after 6th level you can also push the poor sod 10 feet away from you if he's large or smaller.
Tempest is probably my favorite domain of the bunch so far, except maybe the Forge domain from the UA, so I'm always interested when stuff like this pops up.
