D&D 5E Magic Resistance idea

I know quite a few people are rather underwhelmed by 5E's take on good ol' Spell Resistance. I just had an isolated bit of inspiration:

Magic Resistance. This creature is immune to spells cast with spell slots. A spellcaster can overcome this immunity when casting a spell by expending an additional spell slot of the spell's level or higher.

The question is what to do about spells and other magical effects not produced by spell slots.

I like it. It is rather simple, but some of the best rules are.

For other magic effects...

I would say that if it is an item that takes charges, then it takes two charges to use the item effectively against the creature.

For Items that don't take charges I would say that its effect is halved some how. A sword of +2 does +1 instead, a sword of +1 is just a sword, and a sword of wounding's wound die value is halved.

Well since you're basically setting a price of two slots to bypass MR, obviously the simplest way to handle non-slots magical effect is to require to expend two daily (or whatever) uses of them.

Just use Cantrips.

Oh, now there's the seed of a variation that might be fun. Instead of being immune to spells of nth level and lower (like a rakshasa), what if a creature were immune to spells of nth level and higher? I'm not sure what the in-game explanation for such a thing would be, but it might make for an interesting challenge.
