Obscure Films

This is a video I recently made for my channel. I am new here, and I hope this doesn't break any policy regarding what could be considered advertisement. The point of the post isn't to use the board as a platform to advertise my channel or my content. I mostly joined to talk about D&D, but seeing as people are talking about movies on this board, I'd share my video of 5 obscure films.

There are a lot of less popular movies that I love that many people may have missed over the years. They are all low budget, but I wanted to see what kind of movies people like that maybe others may not have known about.

The video itself is rough. I just recently got better filming equipment, but I wanted to test out what I could do with little professional equipment.

A word of warning: the video is age restricted due to a few shots of gore in one of the movies as part of my discussion. It is tame by today's standards, but I didn't want those affected by gory movies being traumatized.

Edit: Adding the list based on suggestion:

5. Altered (2006)
4. Carnosaur II
3. Versus
2. Guyver 2: Dark Hero
1. Ink

What are your thoughts? What movies do you enjoy that maybe no one else has heard about?

My apologies.

I had figured that by offering the video it would give a visual aid to the films described rather than just listing titles and forcing people to track down each title to find out more about them.

I apologize again if it wasted your time. I have added the list, based on your suggestion. Thank you for your input.

Obscure indeed. I've only seen two of those, Ink and Versus. I quite liked Ink, and Versus was pretty fun.

As far as movies I enjoy that are on the obscure side, in no particular order:

Yor - The Hunter From The Future - cheesy, but a favorite from childhood

Conquest - awful, but I can't pass on goremaster Lucio Fulci's take on sword & sorcery

The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb - eerie stop motion animation

Visions of Suffering - if a nightmare could be filmed, it'd look a lot like this

Strings - not sure a movie that stars James McAvoy could be called obscure, but I love this marionette fantasy film

When the Wind Blows - an emotionally devastating film about two old pensioners dealing with an atomic attack on Britain

That is quite the list. I have heard of Yor, but not the others. Lucio Fulci doing a sword and sorcery film just sounds intriguing. I will definitely have to look that up. I enjoyed his Zombi 2 film and there was another I watched: Gates of Hell or City of the Living Dead? I forget the title but it had a scene in there was still sticks with me to this day. Very graphic.

Of that original list I've only seen "Guyver II" (and the original). My list of obscure films would be populated mostly with Roger Coreman's back catalog. Stuff like "Starcrash" starring the likes of Marjoe Gortner, Christopher Plummer, and (yes) David Hasselhoff. And, of course, all of his other space battle movies that re-used the same footage of model ships on wires. So similar that you never know which one you're actually watching.

For more recent stuff there's the likes of John Fuhrman's "A Bit of Bad Luck", starring Cary Elwes. It's such an incredibly dark comedy. Another that I really like, that like "A Bit of Bad Luck" also features a couple of my friends/acquaintances in bit parts, is Jeff Ferrel's "Dead West." That's not the western by Kevin Kittle. Knowing indie actors exposes me to some weird little films.

These days I find that webseries have replaced the quick-and-dirty B movies for me. Stuff like "Improbabilia" by Handsome Robot Productions, or "Strowlers" by Zombie Orpheus Entertainment (not yet in release but I've seen the pilot, and bits of what they shot in Mongolia). These guys are the new B movie producers with budgets from $10K to $500K.

Conquest is filled with absurdity. Laser grass, rescue dolphins, and tons of gore. Plus, everything is filmed in this soft-focus haze.

Love Fulci’s work. Zombi 2 is a favorite. But Gates of Hell was the first one I saw. And yes, it’s got some arresting gore (like the scene of someone vomiting up their own digestive tract).

Overall, good video. The 5 films are genuinely obscure. I can't say I completely agree with your praise of the couple of these films that I've seen, but I get where you're coming from. I also like the way that the intro is short (I really hate when YouTube channels spend the first 30 seconds of a video begging for Subscribes).

One recommendation I have is to trim up the time a little. For only 5 films being covered, 13 minutes is kind of long. There are a couple of sections (e.g. the Carnotaur 2 praise) where it seems like you repeat yourself a lot. You could also talk faster. I think this video could probably have been trimmed down to 10 minutes without losing anything.

I think you could have saved a lot of my time by simply stating your five titles.

Youtube video lists of movies, shows, and video games are common because you get to see clips of the media being discussed. By showing snips of the movies, you get a better idea of whether or not it's worth pursuing.

Ah, that IS the movie I was thinking of. Gates of Hell... I think in the same scene someone crushes their own skull. It was a disturbing scene. Personally, I think Fulci's films would most likely be forgetable if not for the bizarre imagery and extreme gore in his works. But I remember Zombi 2 being well done for a low-budget film. I believe that is considered his masterpiece.
