As you probably know, you can purchase attributes and skills with XP. This table gives you the cumulative cost of such purchases.

(Remember, you get XP equal to your grade for a medium encounter, twice that for a tough one).

you're only adding the cost of two ranks, cumilative would be everything up to, e.g. To buy a new skill the entire way up to level 4 would be 3+6+9+12=30 xp, not 21

So for a grade 10 character it’s 95 medium encounters or about 47 tough ones to get something from 0 to 25.

Well, at some point it's surely more efficient to get new grades, which give two skill increases and four attribute increases (and an exploit). And they work towards increasing your MDP, which is often more important to actually get better at the things you're already good at.

New grades are always more efficient.

New grades are always more efficient.

I might exclude the first rank or two of skills from that statement. Buying rank 1 with 3xp is a great deal, and it's sometimes a good idea to buy rank 2 just before you go up in grade, so that your new grade can give you rank 3 (and give you a 2d6 pool). It is more expensive to spend the XP later you've gained ranks from your career advancement, so you may want to do as much incremental advancement as you think you'll need up front.

For attributes, it can sometimes be worth buying a rank here or there, even if they're at moderately high levels already (e.g. to bump a 5 to a 6). That's probably only a good idea though if your planned career choices are not likely to give you those ranks any time soon.
