The life of Harry vs the life of Kvothe. Bards are way more badass than wizards. ;-)

That's why he's the Kingkiller.

In our groups every time a player attempted to become an AD&D 1e Bard the campaign fizzled before he actually achieved the first level of Bard. The requirements were too high in my opinion. Taste vary.
True. Few ever got to actually play a bard organically.
The 1e bard was just decades ahead of its time.
Now days (3x era +) the multiple classes of xyz lvs would fit right in as everyone expects a game to run long enough for their "build" to come on-line.

I made the 1e bard a few times. What I found was I wanted to play a bard and was not able to do so for too long and it was a bit of a pita. The fighter levels weren't so bad but switching to thief for a while was not so great.

I would have preferred the original version with updated lore/charm tables percentages.

Well, he might inspire one of his companions, any way, for one roll.

Lol, when that inspiration prevents a limited resource attack from fizzling or making a saving throw against a status effect that would seriously impact the party it's like solid gold. The way 5e handles saving throw progression makes granting save bonuses impactful. The average bardic inspiration roll is the similar to the proficiency bonus at those levels but stackable.

You do like your heavily armored STR-based fighter to make those DEX and WIS saves sometimes to, don't you? ;-)

Pest Controller sounds like a Ranger subclass that has abilities that make it better at dealing with swarms and better in tight environment.

Urban Druid could be a druid that protects what's left of nature in a urban environment, not a druid who prefers the city, but one who acknowledges that nature is everywhere, even in the city, who acknowledges people as part of nature despite the environment.

Peasant though, that one's up to you :p
I was thinking that Pest Controller gives you proficiency in manual pump chemical sprayers and just has one feature that reads "Bees?"

Eyes of Nine

Everything's Fine
WAIT A GODDAMN MINUTE I remember this article now! I remember their absolute horseshit logic for why urban druid makes no sense, like what goddamn city has the author lived in that doesn't feature birds? or trees? hell the sewers of every medieval fantasy city is practically guaranteed to have an exciting ecosystem.

I remember now because I wanted so bad to play an urban druid back in 3.5 days, and I can't understand how this idea isn't fascinating for some people.

I like the idea of an Urban Druid

Gradine

The Elephant in the Room (she/they)
I recall an old Twinkin' Out With Red Mage column wherein a bard complains about the party fighter making fun of them. The response was something along the lines of:
"The next time you fight a group of orcs, just cast Sleep on all of them. Maintain eye contact with the fighter as you casually slit their throats"

The High Aldwin

Go play with your fiddle and I'll make my DEX and WIS saves just fine without you--been doing it for years and will continue to do so. ;)

Now, if bardic inspiration could be granted as a reaction or something, it just might be useful--as it is, it's pretty much useless. But again, this horse (and bard) has been beaten to death more than enough times.

It's funny, people used to complain about having to play the cleric heal-bot/support machine, and now you seem to LOVE doing it as a bard... Well, enjoy yourself and your fiddly bard and I'll enjoy--well--every other class. :D

I chose Fighting Man just because of the name: 1. It's just so... dull. 2. I know they were all dudes back in the day, but this is fantasy, can't we have some warrior women?
