So they do have different foundations...
I was short handing "gets an extra attack" in 5e that includes a lot of other classes in 5e significantly more than the 4e martial categorization which 5e doesnt even "really" have tell me how paladins and rangers are they or arent they martial? it doesn't really matter 5e made a huge amount of classes samey samey

Since only 4e uses the classification I was under the impression you meant classes grouped that way by 4e. Also the fact that you can't easily classify Rangers, Paladins and Rogues as "martial" in 5e because of the differences seems to go against your logic of them being very samey. Just saying.

Well I chose low level powers from the PHB because that's what the majority of people will play and see (since most groups don't go to high level and don't buy in past the PHB for any edition). And yes I chose 4 from different classes that were similar as an example of why some might feel the powers are samey... but how many would satisfy this nebulous criteria you seem to have created?

EDIT: And just to be clear, my claim is that I can totally understand how the powers of 4e could appear samey to certain groups... dependent on classes played, powers selected and the fact that most groups do not play high level and do not buy beyond the PHB.
So is your claim that some 4e powers are samey, or that all 4e powers are samey?

Can we throttle it back just a hair?

This was actually an interesting discussion and I was hoping to engage Xetheral on the "strategy vectors" (no clue what else to call them) in 4e and how they may engage with the encounter example I created...but it looks like he's (gracefully) exiting stage left.

No it means the word "martial" is not the most significant part and you are focusing on it for silliness.
Also every single extra attack combatant in 5e has the same basic set of at-wills that lack even the distinction (across class) of a set of at-wills that were cherry picked for similarity (across class).

Dude you used the word martial in reference to 5e.

EDIT: Also I'm not sure why all of your arguments are based around what 5e does... I haven't made a claim either way about 5e. How about we talk about 4e on it's own merits?
