D&D 5E Spell access via...tools?

I am/have created a set of astrology style spells, based on the old Arcanum system.

I realized, I don't care what class casts them (as long as they have spell casting ability of course).

So I ask...what are yall's reaction to adding the spells to every caster's list, but stating they must be trained in "astrologer's tools" to be able to cast the spells? (Acquiring would be as normal)

Artificers already cast spells by using tools, so it's not too much of a stretch to apply the mechanic to other spell casters.

The main problem that someone would have with it, is trying to juggle a spell focus for normal spells, the astrologer's tools, a free hand for somatic components, and whatever else they would want to hold ( such as potions, weapon(s) and/or shield).

I think it's a fine idea, reminds me of the healing potion spell that required alchemist supplies. Really wish that was expanded upon. Do they need to have to astrologer's tools on hand to cast the spells or just an understanding of astrology through the tool proficiency?

It works really well, since tool use implies expert knowledge but then are spells required when the skill will do? (I hate spells that impose on skills)

I think that really depends on what spells it grants. It probably shouldn't be adding top tier spells like Fireball or Foresight. More situationally useful spells (which is what I'd honestly expect from astrology) are probably fine.

Something to consider is that depending on the spells on the list, this might be a no-brainer for casters. If every PC caster takes this, it might be both an indication that this is too good, as well as being a bit boring and samey.

I agree it really depends on the spells. Would it be a problem for a warlock to spam every hour? Would it be too big a combat boost for a class like EK? I don’t think it would be likely to be a problem, but it could be.

I was not intending on having the actual tools be on hand as a material component. The knowledge gained while learning the tools would be the requirement.

Nah, the spells are actual spellsy things.

I will post an example when I get the hcance.
