Yes, but it worked a lot different from how psionics works in every other edition. What's your point here? Psionics has and always be closer to how it worked in 2e than in 1e.
My point is that 1e established what psionics was, and it wasn't creation of astral constructs and such. Getting rid of those makes it more like it was supposed to be.

I never played the earlier editions, but I don't care what the flavor text was or whatever astral constructs are. I do care about the mechanics, and I think sticking with the 6 subclasses I listed above are a good layout for how psionics IMHO should work in 5e.

Astral Constructs are the "steel defender" you mentioned. Summoning creatures or constructs should not be a part of psionics.

Psionics has always had an otherworldliness to it in D&D and pop-culture. Far Realm/Xoriat manipulation, aberrations, and other otherworldly creatures have psionic powers, and are normally part of the origin of psionic abilities. I don't think it's super outrageous to have a psionicist have some summoning capabilities.
