D&D 5E Feat: Spellfist

Blue

Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal
Please critique, especially balance. Based loosely off the Tavern Brawler feat, and it has some overlap with it.

Spellfist

Combining martial prowess and casting, you are able to channel your spells and your Ki to land spells with unarmed attacks.

  • You are proficient with unarmed strikes.
  • Your unarmed strikes do d4 damage. If they already do more than that, increase them by one die size to a maximum of d12s.
  • Your unarmed strikes may use your STR, DEX, or casting ability score to add to hit and damage.
  • When you use a slot to cast a spell of 1st level or higher that requires you to make a melee spell attack or ranged spell attack to deliver to the target, you may instead make an unarmed or natural attack to deliver. If you may make multiple unarmed attacks such as through the Extra Attack feature and the spell produces multiple spell attack rolls, you may make additional attacks up to the lower of the spell limit or the number of attacks you can make in an Attack Action. Normal spell requirements abotu the targets (such as if target several different creatures) must still be observed.

Example
Jeung has Extra Attack and casts Scorching Ray. They want to use their DEX to attack. Scorching Ray would normally produce three rays, but Jeung only has two attacks in an Attack action so can only deliver two of them. Jeung may make two unarmed attacks, each doing d4+DEX plus 2d6 fire on a hit.

Notes
Wanted the feat not to lose the damage boost if taken with monk. Part of wanting this is a particular homebrew setting I'm envisioning.
Still not finesse, just like monks. But you can use your casting ability score.
Excluded cantrips because damage got too high.
Doesn't work with the bonus action attacks, even flurry.
Tavern Brawler gives a +1 to STR or CON, allows a bonus action attempt to grapple, and grants proficiency with improvised weapons as well. This grants varied ability score usage, spell delivery, and can boost your unarmed attack if already over d4.

I think this will be too good for a warlock built around melee eldritch blast. You're quickly getting up to 1d10+1d4+2xCha = 18 damage per blast.

For any other character I think it will be too weak; there aren't enough spells with multiple attack roles for a martial character to take good advantage, and I don't really see how it makes a fisticuffs wizard good enough.

I think being able to make an unarmed strike as a bonus action when you cast a cantrip might work better?

That seems more useful than this for the reasons you state, yeah.

Also the "you may use your spellcasting score to deliver attacks" generally even with damage starting at a d4 seems pretty "Welcome to the Danger Zone!" balance-wise. You normally need a 3-level dip into Warlock to get something like that. Sure, it's a d4, but it's a d4+Stat mod, and my Shenanigans Sense is tingling from that.

Well, 1 level dip, with Hexblade. A full feat seems commiserate with that.

Not allowing it with cantrips seems to block most of the worst shenanigans. Makes MAD classes with spells a little less MAD if they're will to forgo weapon options. I can't see half or third casters doing it, unless they were doing a sword&board build (except maybe for 4 Elements Monk, lol) Opens up some neat build concepts in allowing some melee fun for primary casters by giving another option to shillelagh and hexblade dips.

I like it, overall. Opens up some new ideas, and doesn't fail the Sharpshooter test.
