D&D General Two underlying truths: D&D heritage and inclusivity

Okay, so what if I found your profile picture offensive because I hate anime? Would that be a valid complaint? Do I have the right to tell you that you must change your profile pic because I don't like the specific thing depicted in it?

The Satanic Panic was people getting angry and unreasonable for no reason. This is us asking for change because we would prefer it that way as well as certain depictions being offensive to an existing people.
You can't assume someone's motives and then hand-waive their concerns away.

You can't compare anime to someone's religious beliefs and someone's faith is as valid and as important as someone's race. I'm not sure this discussion is going anywhere good. Is this even on-topic? We are talking about heritage and inclusion.

I'm not sure religion is taken with the same amount of levity as race. But it should be.

Despite this, I think things like angels and devils can easily be represented in the game in a non-offensive way. That said, some people may choose to not put those elements in their games.

No disagreement on the anime front, but somone's faith is mutable based on internal processes, whereas their "race" is derived from externally-imposed conditions (much like some posters right here have been arguing for their right to validate the offense taken by others.) They aren't the same, always ask where the power resides.

:-(

We were apparently lucky in northern Illinois - the two combination comic shop/game shops, game/model shop, and the various small toy stores in the malls in our city didn't seem to have changed anything. (The toy store in the mall had them on the left wall right as you walked in for many years).
Indeed, you were lucky. From experience, the bigger the town (or populated area) the less likely what happened here is likely to happen. One town of about 15k at the time with the surrounding villages gave us about 30 -35k people (maybe a bit more, I never was too deep into demographics). We were about 200 into the hobby at that time (that I was aware of), with about 40 that were among my players and that number only grew. We were about 0.6% (or less) of the total population but we were targeted as lost boys and girls for our hobby. I don't know how many presentation I did before the Trappist Monks and three local priests helped me. That closed the debate but boy had I to work hard to get my point accross. I wish a lot more parents had been able to read English at that time. It might have made things easier for me (or worse... who knows?). Yes French Canadian origins.

It doesn't make it any less important. And in some cultures, race and religion are synonymous. I think it's important to treat everyone with respect.

IMO one cannot choose whether one believes in god either.

Asking for a clear option for things to be done respectfully, as in what WotC is talking about now, might be "let different groups of 'peoples' have the chance to be good too, and don't glibly use tropes racists have". That feels like it would be akin to those who are religious asking "can we have an option for a monotheistic setting, and don't glibly use anti-religiois tropes in game".

That feels very different than wanting everything that goes against their religious sensitivities gone. The DMG already discusses having a monotheistic world and a low magic world. Wanting all of them to be that way, with no spells or demons or angels, seems very different.

You... just seem really unread on the subject - surely the emphasis on things like baptism, conversion and acceptance cover a lot of grounds?
