Would Avatar had been more acceptable if the main protagonist wasn't white?

Maybe, I mean, other than the one nerdy scientist and the pilot... scanning some screen shots I don't see any other people of color anywhere. Though the IMBD gives us a lot of them, cast as the native people.

So, having a more diverse cast might have been a good step. Allowing the native people to play a bigger role in saving themselves would have been better.

You know, the more I think about this movie, the more parts of it seem ridiculous. Remember how Sulley got to be the leader of the revolution? By taming that massive orange beast. Remember how he showed his tactical genius and cunning to capture it.... by simply flying higher than it and jumping onto its back.

Glad to know their sacred ritual to prove one is capable of being a great leader is as simple as "jump on its back when it can't see me"

There's a lot more white people than Native Americans in America... just because most white folks weren't didn't see the "white savior" narrative doesn't mean there wasn't one.

P.S. It was also a decade ago and I saw it as a kid, didn't think about it much after.

I got exactly the opposite impression. I got the impression that the moral was supposed to be that white people are bad and that the whole thing was a centuries late allegory about European colonialism and/or the westward expansion in America.

I can concur - the Italian Mystaran fanbase is inspiring. Along with a few others around the globe they have put together the lovingly-crafted Threhold magazine which is still going strong.
All of the fanbase is great. People calling it just another European clone haven't read it. The setting has just as many non-European versions as they do European. You've got Sind (India), Hule (Persia) The Savage Baronies (South and Central America), Wallaru plateau (Pre-colonization Australia), Jennites (Scythian), Tanakumba (Congo), Ierendi (Polynesia), Nithia (Egypt), Atruaghin (pre-Colombia Native Americans), Ethengar (Mongolia), Ylaruam (Arabia), Ochalea (China), Pearl Islands (Melanesia), and that's not even counting the pure fantasy nations like Graakalia or Yavdlom.

A few things to keep in mind . . . both the terms "Asian" and "Asian American" are a bit problematic themselves as they lump a very broad and diverse group of people together under one label

This is another place where I actually see the opposite problem. The issue I see withnit it that it pretends that "asia" is just China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Vietnam, etc and kind of ignores the fact that India, Pakistan, and most of Russia by area are in Asia as well

I was always a little sad when I found out that they had so much more planned for the line but it ended up being canned. I recall reading in a dragon mag that Bruce Heard had a gazetteer on the region of the Heldannic Knights that never eventuated.

There was a bunch planned, the setting sold rather well, better than Greyhawk at times. Didn't help it got hit the hardest in TSR's "Nuke Phase" when every setting got completely rewritten. It fell a victim to the purge of Gary's friends, along with Greyhawk. I've been trying to bring it back to 5th, there is a sizeable fanbase for it. It needs a few tweaks, but for newer players it's an easy setting to get in to and understand without a lot of explanation.
