One of the characters players* in my 5e game HATES gnomes. If he learns there's Illithid Gnomes up in Icewind Dale....
I imagine genocide will ensue.

*and by default all of his characters.

I’m eternally confused by people who “hate” fantasy races in general, and gnomes in particular. It just seems incredibly weird, to me.

Every update about this adventure is messing with my expectations regarding the tone of it. At first I was excited for a grim and frostbitten horror campaign set in the dark north of the world... now tbh I'm pretty excited for Gnome mind flayers that walk on their tentacles, and scrolls of Tarrasque summoning.
don't forget 3 stacked kobolds in a trench coat

Well, you see, it is becomes gnomes are not only terrible and bad, they have no reason to exist. Someone wanted dwarves that were more elfish and someone else wanted elves that were more dwarfish and everyone forgot there were already halflings so we got saddled with gnomes as a PC race good for exactly nothing.

Except punting. And squishing between the toes of ogres. And, apparently, turning into tiny vehicles of brain gobbling horror.
