Once upon a time, this would have been the kind of thing companies would have announced at Comic-Con or GenCon. The fact that they're skipping both of those -- which were only weeks before their announcement -- is pretty telling.

I think we're going to see major companies using conventions for news and announcements less and less, even if the pandemic ends tomorrow. Goodman Games, Renegade Games, DC Comics, Blizzard Entertainment, Wizards of the Coast and lots of companies I'm sure I'm forgetting are just going around the traditional structure and I don't think we will get them back.

(That said, I signed up for four GenCon Online games this past weekend and, other than the one that got cancelled due to technical reasons, had a blast.)

You are definitely right in general, but Dungeons & Dragons in particular hasn't used Conventions as an announcement platform in yeeeeeeears now, to be fair. They don't even go to GenCon in any capacity.

The convention based announcement scheme doesn't really make sense in the age of Twitch, YouTube and Twitter. That was based on magazines and word of mouth from the hardcore getting the message out, which is not the world we live in. This is an accelerant for an ongoing change, not a change of course for the industry.
