That isn’t navel-gazing, nihilistic, and “subverting expectations.” In other words, heroic fantasy. Genuinely heroic fantasy is all about choices and the consequences of decisions. Decisions made by what players believe is the right thing to do given the circumstances and what they know. Choices that put them on a hero's journey.

Great blog post. Unfortunately, it might be a bit late after Descent into Avernus. I guess we'll see with Rime of the Frost Maiden.
I don't know anyone who played Descent and didn't like it, so that's an excellent target to tweak. I haven't played/read it myself, so I don't know what the end conditions of the module are.

They guys who made D&D so long ago were both wargamers and pulp fiction fans. When you combine the two, campaigning works.
