Lots of Korean webtoons create countries and empires based in the British empire for the Victorian age but they don't worry at all about to be a loyal adaptation. And what the matter?

Why does this flawed argument always keep rearing its ugly head? The notion of "We could be offended too, because look how western history is presented". But we're not, and so this argument instantly crumbles and should never be brought up again.

That's not entirely true, though, is it? As a European, I've had a couple of opportunities to get offended by the way European history is portrayed in American media. There's no such thing as "western history", really, and when it comes to American movies, series and games, I'm as much an outsider as if I were Japanese.

Opportunities being the keyword here. It is not the same, because there isn't the same history of racism. And that is why this argument does not hold any water.

It basically amounts to: -insert group- has no right to be offended, because if I want to, I can be offended too. Stop it.

My argument is that anyone has the right to be offended, and that we should listen to people who are offended. And I have to admit that you thinking that you understand my perspective better than I do is something I find quite offensive.

Are you part of a marginalized group who has historically been the victim of racism? If so, and your offense is related, then yes. But usually this argument involves nitpicking something to be offended by, in order to try and undermine the argument that we should be more respectful in our depictions of other cultures. And that is just repugnant and should be called out for what it is.

So if you're in the majority you're not allowed to be offended by something?

That's not the point. The point is that it is an insincere argument, made in bad faith. It is an excuse to ignore the griefances of actual victims, by pretending to be the victim yourself.

"Oh, you're complaining about me beating you? What about me? I stubbed my toe on the way here, and you didn't even care!"
