D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

I know it's not real.

The implications of this thread are that Players are playing Non-Humans for reasons other than mechanical bonuses, or so they can do something other than disguise themselves with funny hats.

I say this is impossible as we are Humans, and we cannot be Non-Humans.

Other posters implied that this is not the case, that they can indeed be Non-Humans.

Sorry you came into an argument at the half way point and failed to understand what I was saying.
Well, the thing is, it is all make believe. You cannot 'really' be a human being other than yourself either. And yes, it is a perfectly valid point that pretending to be a non-human rather than just not-you-human is more difficult. But that is just a difference of degree, not of kind, so I'm not sure why we should draw the line precisely there.

It IS a difference of KIND. The KIND being Human and Not-Human!

Would it make you feel better if I said it was...

...donning a costume?

...playing a role, like how an actor in a movie plays a role???

...pretending to be a Non-Human when in actuality they are just a Human playing a game of pretend and just want to be able to say they are have purple skin and tentacles though they will continue to act and think and feel they way a Human would despite obviously not looking like a human???

...playing a Human wearing a very fancy hat???

...because they like having particular mechanical bonuses in a game of pretend???
Again, no, because all of this misses the point. The purpose of playing a non-human character is not to don a costume, or to pretend to be non-human, or to play a human with a hat. The point, once again, is introspection. To gain new insight into the way your experiences shape you, by imagining having had different experiences.
I feel as though we are talking past each other.
I certainly feel as though my words are going past you.

I know mine are going way above your head...

Uh...okay...well, when we finally meet an Elf, I hope we ask it if it has a Human or Non-Human mind. I am very curious to know if it is just a Human mind cleverly disguised in a different biological body, or if it actually is a Non-Human.
I am not sure why you would think that a creature so similar to human than a typical fantasy elf would have a thought process totally incomprehensible to us humans. I have pretty good idea what my dogs think, and they're far more different from humans than humans are from elves. With humans and elves we're probably talking about something like a difference between the homo sapiens and the neantherdals.
