They are, but lithium batteries wear out eventually. It doesn't look like the battery could ever be replaced.

well, Li batteries last for 300+ cycles with most of the capacity. And can go even more with reduced capacity.
I know that it is not a correct comparison, but my S9 is now almost 3 years old and on average it is charged once per day.
that is 1000 cycles, and yes battery is now about 70% what it was when it was new.

If they last a session or more, with one session per week, that is more than 5 years if you take care of them.

People change cars in less time.

So, I'm watching it and I am thinking, they look kinda fun, then I see that it can link to Roll20. That makes me want to buy a set for each of my players. The ability to roll physical dice but have the results show up in your VTT would be awesome.

But yeah, if I bought 4-6 sets of these at $200 a pop, I'd expect to find divorce papers on my desk the next time I return home from a work trip.

Somehow missed that they were VTT-connectable. That is an actual feature, and I wouldn't mind taking advantage of it. But $200 is still incredibly expensive even for a super complete set of dice. Maybe someday when you can get a really really complete set of dice for like $60....but even then, I just don't think I could justify the small (albeit cool!) benefits.

I do appreciate the "potential to do something special when you roll a crit" though, that's also a neat feature for live gaming.

Guess that's sort of the ultimate problem for me here: these are "pretty special Christmas or birthday present"-level prices, and something merely neat for $200, giving you only 7 dice (meaning these dice are nearly $30 apiece), is just too rich for my blood.

Not quite. Time will degrade lithium cells even if you aren't constantly using them. So, small cells last 300 cycles, or 2 to 3 years, whichever comes first.

So, these are dice with a limited lifespan of use. I think I'll wait until they aren't a new technology, and the price will probably drop, before I consider them.

I'd have to worry about the batteries - I would expect they are not replaceable, and they'd only be good for so long before deteriorating.

That said, they do seem pretty. Not $200 pretty, but pretty.

HEY! Those are my tax dollars! If you buy them, I get to share them.

I'm thinking about 2d20. It is a splurge, and I've been bitten by KS dice before that did not deliver as promised. However, I can live with $77 to $95 bucks (depending upon shipping). I mostly want them for the post COVID era when my D&D group returns to face to face, except me, who moved across the country. I'll be able to share my d20s with them from across the nation, I hope.

If you have $200 to spend on dice it is reasonable to assume you have a quantum temporal suspension chamber to store them in!

To me, this isn't worth $200. It's neat. But the price tag seems to be good only for generating buzz for the Kickstarter, not to justify the actual dice. My trusty Chessex do the job just fine.
