Level Up (A5E) Level Up: An issue of class names

I get the name change for monk to adept, as you can conceptually see how they are shifting the class into a few new directions.

But the Herald is still just a Paladin. Sure there are some changes, but it’s still a divine knight all the same. I don’t see the reason for a change there.

It doesn’t matter where the name got it’s start, If you ask gamers what a Paladin is, they will tell you it’s a holy knight. No one is going to say “oh those are the knights of charlamagne”
I agree with you, but I would personally like different class names so people understand these are not the same classes as O5e.

Hmm, a Herald/Paladin could multiclass, but a Fighter/Fighter could not (I don't know why they would want to, but it is a weird side effect of some classes having name changes but others not).
I don't think so. I don't think LevelUp classes can multiclass with O5e classes. They are too different.

I agree. I've seen some (non-designers) mention taking O5e subclasses with LevelUp classes. Is that even possible? I know they've said that it's "backwards compatible" but I don't think they quite mean it like that. I suspect that it's more that a player could play an O5e character in a LevelUp game, or LevelUp characters could fight the monsters from the O5e monster manual without conversion. But I don't think we can mix-and-match pieces of a character, exactly.

Anyone know?

I can’t think offhand of a reason why you couldn’t. They’re structured the same. O5E classes miss a lot of the exploration pillar abilities so those players will have less they can do during the exploration pillar, but it’s a choice you can make.

I think I just realised that the "Archetypes" article is talking about Subclasses. And specifically says that you can use O5e ones with LevelUp. I might be a little slow there.

Thank you for the clarification.

Yes. I don't think you'll find the word "subclass" in the O5E PHB either.

Hmm. You might be right. As you know, of course, we tend to use "subclass" when we are talking about them collectively because they use different names for them depending on class. It is true that more than one class uses 'archetype' (rogues and fighters, IIRC). For some reason it took me a bit to understand that LevelUp archetypes would be interchangeable with O5e subclasses, though.

But again, that supports the idea that all the class names should be changed, not just some of them. I can definitely see people being confused by "fighter is fighter, but adept is...monk?"
