Kickstarter MakeDungeons - 3D Virtual Tabletop with AI based DM and DM assistant features

Game Trailer

I love tabletop RPG's, like Pathfinder and DND. A long time player. They feel like you are really living in there and dealing with a situation, but it is really hard to keep track of every little thing. Also, you have to find an experienced DM that knows the module you want to play. I came up with my own solution. Why don't I come up with a simple drag and drop scripting and auto map making system so whole rules can be implemented and maps can be made easily, and be shared or even sold by the makers. Things grew up and after 8 months, we are at a phase that we are proud to show what we have done. Here is a gameplay and features showcase video from youtube of our project MakeDungeons. Also, you can find more on the channel itself.

Gameplay and Features Showcase

We are starting a Kickstarter campaign about the project that will launch at 15.07.2021. If we could make numbers high, we can reach more people, so if you like the project, we are waiting for your attendance.

For completionists, here is game's formal description:

MakeDungeons is a set of tools to make tabletop RPGs more accessible and story driven. When you want to play a tabletop RPG, enter our Players’ area, find a game you like and just play. You won’t need a game master who has to prepare the game beforehand. The AI system will narrate the game, track rules, and do the actions and movements of non-player characters.

How it works:
  • Create a story module or download a created one.
  • If you create one yourself, you can use our drag-and-drop event maker to set up actions that the Virtual DM will carry out automatically.
  • When you join the story module as a player, the game will be controlled by the Virtual DM, based on the events set up in the story module.
  • NPC actions will be controlled by our machine learning system, so it is not necessary for a person to take up the role of a DM.
  • A person still may join the game as a DM and take control of any functionality or make adjustments on the fly, but, in any case, DM's won’t need to learn any module they play by heart.
This opens up possibilities for new types of gameplay styles, like single player games or even tabletop MMORPGs, where you form parties in-game for quests, or engage in large PVP battles.

As a player, just enjoy your game. MakeDungeons offers dynamic lighting, integrated character sheets, animated models, location and language aware voice chat (you won’t be able to talk to far away players or players that share no common language), and the ability to add custom miniatures and textures. Also, when your character retires, you can download a copy of your adventure as a journal.

Interesting! I have questions!

  • I assume (but it doesn't state explicitly) but this is for groups, not single players?
  • What terrain sets come with the builder? It looks like a tile based system?
  • Does each player need to install the software, or can it be run in a browser?
  • What's the setup for publishers who might want to distribute their adventures using the platform?
  • 5E is built-in, but can publishers offer their own rulesets for use?

Hello Morrus,
First of all, thanks for the interest. Now, let's get back to questions.
  • Game is intended for groups but I mean to make bots that can act based on general roles assigned to them with time. If we do good on Kickstarter, I will have more help, so this will be a feature from the start. I also made single player option a stretch goal on our campaign.
  • It has about 150 tilable textures, which help to build different types of terrains. And yes, it is a tile based system. You paint the tiles, attach textures by selecting multiple tiles, then if enviroment is indoors, it creates walls automatically based on wall texture you choose. You can check picture below.
  • Each player will need to install software. I intent to add simply addable visual effects like volume fog, particles etc. and they will not run smoothly on browsers.
  • Making a new game system or module is done inside the game. When it is finished, builders will have option to upload it to our servers. It will show up at our marketplace, which will be accessible from our website. The uploader will configure it as he/she sees fit and put it as publicly downloadable asset.
  • Of course, they will be able to offer their own ruleset. Not only that, I will make everything modular, so you will be able to choose a game, make modifications on top of it and save it as an add-on. It will not be saved as a whole game. Just modifications. This will allow multiple modifications to work together. For example, I want to play a game. I added main game and added two addons on top of it. For same name rules, whichever add-on is last, it will be active. Others will be overwritten. Here is an example video:

If we generate enough attention, it will be easier for us to get licensed official titles. That is really important to us. So, thanks for the attention.

I'm definitely intrigued. More questions!
  • Does each player have to buy the software individually?
  • How does the marketplace work? Can I sell stuff there? If so, what is the commission?
  • Where is the game itself 'hosted' in a shared party game?
  • Please tell me I can use it on my Mac!

Of course! Thank you.
  • I first intented to make game free for all and get small cuts from games that are bought from the Marketplace, but there are problems with that. First, all our 3D models and animations are bought, and they are not cheap. Collected money just wouldn't be enough. Secondly, in free games it is really hard to deal with cheaters. It breaks the fun for everyone. If their account is somewhat earned, people will be less prone to cheating, due to fear of losing it. So, we will make subscriptions cheap and give many incentives in the form of store credits. So, when you buy something from marketplace, you will be able to use store credit to buy subscription.
  • How marketplace works: Players make their own game rulesets or modules and upload it to marketplace. If player decides to put it to Marketplace for free, there will be no commission. It will be freely downloadable. If they decide to sell it, we will take %20 of what it is sold for.
  • Games will be hosted on one of the players. I will try to make it that current progress of the game is saved in the cloud. That way if host is no show from other games, other players will be able to take over.
  • Yes, we will support Mac. (y)(y)(y)
