If you have chafing from the kilt, you're doing it wrong... tho' it won't protect from chafing due to flabby thighs...

I want a proper 7 yards of old buchanan for a great kilt. (I've worn great kilts before, but they were borrowed.) Your shirt is supposed to be at least mid-thigh. I've worn "short kilts" (unsewn kilts of about 3-4 yards), too, and an Old Buchannan regimental. (the length of a great kilt is often said to be 3×Height, plus a yard if fat, or two if obese.

It's worth noting that in some eras, the kilt was said to be removed before battle, and hung from the shield arm... Havng used 4 yards of wool as a fencing defensive device, it's really effective.

Certainly seems possible in dire straits as decent shields were relatively few and far between. But I'm a wee bitty doubtful about a Scot throwing their clothing into a blender, like what do I wear now?

Also note that the fabric is probably 13 or 16 ounces per yard - so a 7 yard great kilt will weigh 7 lbs on your arm. That's not light for swinging around for any length of time.

During the height of the greatkilts, a leinam (sp?) was worn - a sing or double layer tunic to the knees or mid calves, along with knee-high hose (tied with a ribbon over the calf -- flashes are a fake of that look), and the kilt isn't going to get all that cut up; it slows the force rather than a shield's capability for an active parry. 4 yards, looped to hang elbow to wrist and forearm to knee (usually about 1 yard) is 4 or 8 layers of fabric (a short kilt), or 6 to 12 for a great kilt. Which depends upon fabric width and personal folding.
