in 2e I often would have a high level mage come in with 13+ stoneskin layers on (I think it was 1d4+1/2 caster level maybe it was full caster level) and my players dreaded the "i take no action on my turn but say 'don't push this'" followed by them attacking to hear "pink that's one off my stone skin" cause they KNEW that meant high level caster...

yes I was a bit of a jerk as a teenager.
