It was very interesting, I only had the basic set and an article from a french magazine to guide me, so I read it front to back and back to front with my barely adequate english. Fortunately the example of play was enough and my friends interested enough to get us going.

The Mentzer Red Box in 1985, when it was translated in Italian by Editrice Giochi.
So you are the culprit, the reason for which my DDB is cluttered by a Manuale del Giocatore ! :)

1981 Basic Set, followed by the OD&D white (both burned in a fire).
Then I "upgraded" to 1ed with PHB, PHB (yep two), MM, DMG and never stopped expanding my collection since then.

Never had the pleasure of playing this edition: I discovered DND around the time of 2nd Edition and didn't really get into "collecting" books/supplements till 3.0/3.5 and then truly officially started buying/playing DND with 5th Edition.

I'd probably aim for B/X or Rules Cyclopedia.

I need this info added on my driver's license for the same reason it has my blood type. Every time someone asks, I can never be sure and I would hate to get it wrong. How has someone not made a cheat sheet already?

Huhn, I didn't realize Holmes was initially '77. I got mine in '79, with B2 Keep on the Borderlands, for Chistmas. Still had the chits, instead of dice. I was only 10 and the rules were beyond me - my dad had to read and explain them to me. Sadly, I lost the rulebook after a month or so. Didn't have another rulebook until the '81 Moldvay set, which I loved to death.
