Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

There's a new MtG Kamigawa set out which I thought was surprising since I thought that setting didn't score very well with players. I've spent time looking through spoiler lists and looking at the art of the various cards, I'm not sure what genre (cyberpunk? Neonpunk, does punk even need to be part of the name) you'd call it but I think it'd make for a cool DnD setting.

The setting still has powerful spirits, samurai, ninja, and spellcasters, but also has things like skyscrapers (one which walks), mecha, mecha pilots, and neon. I never got all that excited about the original Kamigawa set, but this one I'm hoping gets made into a setting book.

I drafted it twice at a convention this last weekend. It was tons of fun. That was also the consensus of everyone I drafted with or talked to who had played it.

I'm intrigued by Neon Dynasty. I just recently got back into Magic. The setting doesn't feel very Magic-y to me, but its a really cool concept. There was a music video that dropped last week that started me thinking I'd like to see it as a setting for an anime.

I hope Neon becomes a hardbook D&D setting. I am already looking forward to it!

I plan to use it multiculturally for Near Future supertech emergences here and there around the world.

At the same time, I enjoy the Japanesque regional setting, and appreciate the cultural sensitivity consultations to keep the vibe authentic.

Oh yeah, it'd make for an excellent setting and, since they were releasing settings with unique mechanics, I think this setting would make for a great system with mobile battle suits or (magi-neon-punk) futuristic sort of subclasses and equipment.

Yeah, that's sort of what I was thinking when I saw the boxes and then looked up the cards. Feels like it's moved on a bit from standard magic settings so, while it's still MtG, it's evolved into something else. Basically, neon makes it feel not quite like MtG, still cool though and it looks like it explains who the enigmatic wanderer is from earlier settings.

Wonder how it will be recieved. Kinda missed Kamigawa block. Still was legal when I played but I was busy with Ravnica after taking a break 2002 missing Mirrordin and Kamigawa.

Quit for good 2010 but Neon Dynasty would have interest for me.

The set is clearly generally popular, I'm seeing a lot of buzz. I hope WotC continues their trend of 1 mtg book/year and this year we get Kamigawa; it'd make the most sense out of the sets we're getting this year.
  1. Brand synergy means I doubt we'd ever get a setting book for an mtg setting that wasn't printed that year
  2. Kamigawa is sweet AF; it'd be 5e's first official dip into the ocean of asian fantasy, and it hits a lot of cyberpunk ideas in a way that still works for D&D (No guns!)
  3. We don't know a ton about New Capena, but given that we have both Ravnica and Eberron for urban, faction-oriented settings I doubt it'd be super unique
  4. Dominaria is... fine, I guess? But it's generic enough I'd question why do Dominaria over FRCS.
  5. Brother's War is Dominaria, but even more magi-tek. Yikes!
