If one were considering purchasing a rpg-ish board game, which would be the preferred choice: the new Heroquest or Castle Ravenloft (or similar, like Wrath of Ashardalon)?

Get the original HeroQuest if you can. I really enjoyed Castle Ravenloft. However Hero Quest was a whole other level of enjoyment (I am assuming the new version is the same but I know nothing about it).

I am watching a YouTube video of someone playing it, and it has appeal. It moves quickly, at least the way the guy in the video plays.

Do the players get to carry over the magic items they find from one adventure to the next?

GreyLord

Legend
Up to level 4, right?

That is correct. The others only allow an advancement to Level 2 and not much of a campaign (though there is one, with Ashardalon being the beginning of one where you can have a better campaign then you did in Ravenloft) in relation to Mad Mage.

In regards to Heroquest and your question

You can carry Magic Items from one quest to the other if you so desire and want to develop characters over a campaign.

Or if you want to play solo singluar adventures, you don't have to.

Many prefer the option to carry items from one adventure to the next and play through a campaign.

There’s plenty of custom rules to create a levelling system if you have a look. My favourite basically allows the player to build up in essence a “feat deck.”

HQ needs a DMs but it is maybe the best dungeon-crawler boardgame you can find in the market. Simple rules easy to be learnt by newcomers. There are secret doors and hidden traps. It is more a feeling of exploring a labyrinth when you have to choose between open this or that door, or to continue walking in the hall. The leveling up is getting gold coins to buy better item, simple, but better than automatic milestones.

Edit: Today with an app the game without DM is possible.
