D&D 5E Announcement Next Week--What Hints For Upcoming D&D Books?

Draconic Options was in Unearthed Arcana in April 2021, and Fizban's Treasury of Dragons came out in October. The same applied to Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, and other books--the lead time appears to typically be somewhere around 6 months. So what have we had recently which might give us an insight into upcoming books?

WotC is holding a press event this coming Friday, with an embargo for March 22nd (which is Tuesday next week), meaning that an announcement is around the corner.

Unearthed Arcana has slowed in the last year or so, but there have been two notable articles:
  • August 2021 -- Travelers of the Multiverse. 6 months after this was February, so if the 6-month lead time theory holds true, a multiverse-themed book would be imminent. The amount of speculative chatter about Spelljammer, Planescape, and 'Planejammer' is at a high.
  • March 2022 -- Heroes of Krynn. This UA was released last week; six months would put a Dragonlance hardcover roughly about September, around the same time that Weis & Hickman's new Dragonlance novel releases.
So these two appear the most likely--some kind of multiverse book, and a Dragonlance book.

We know that a new starter set--Dragons of Stormwreck Isle--is on its way this year. WotC has spoken about two brand new settings, and two classic settings in 2022 (which fits the theory!)

They also spoke about a 'brand new format' for the 2 classic settings--WotC's Ray Winninger said in June last year that ""Each of these products is pursuing a different format you've never seen before. And neither is "digital only;" these are new print formats."

As I've mentioned on a couple of occasions, there are two more products that revive "classic" settings in production right now.

The manuscript for the first, overseen by [Chris Perkins], is nearly complete. Work on the second, led by [F. Wesley Schneider] with an assist from [Ari Levitch], is just ramping up in earnest. Both are targeting 2022 and formats you've never seen before.

In addition to these two titles, we have two brand new [D&D] settings in early development, as well as a return to a setting we've already covered. (No, these are not M:tG worlds.)

As I mentioned in the dev blog, we develop more material than we publish, so it's possible one or more of these last three won't reach production. But as of right now, they're all looking great.

1) A “novellic RPG” for Dragonlance, where key excerpts from the Dragonlance Chronicles are printed in the adventure as "boxed text", but where the DM plugs in the names and actions of the PCs instead of Raistlin, Tanis, etc.

2) An "atlas-adventure module" entitled "Spelljammer: Prime Worlds of the Multiverse." Contains a complete global map for every Prime Material world which has been featured in any edition of D&D (and M:tG). Including Toril, Aebir, Oerth, Uerth, Aerth, Eberron, Krynn, Athas, Nerath, Aebrynis, Mystara, Exandria, Zendikar, Innistrad, Kaladesh, Amonkhet, Ixalan, Dominaria, Theros, Ravnica, and Strixhaven, and others. The lesser known worlds are given a small thumbnail map, while the main worlds are given a full one or two page spread.

Along with a mini-adventure for each of the mainline worlds, connected together through a world-hopping meta-plot which offers the "Travelers of the Multiverse" options and spelljammer ships / astral skiffs. Like Tales from the Yawning Portal, but based on world-hopping.

Also includes with an Ampersand Dragon-shaped phlogiston "D&D galaxy" map rendered by the same artist who did the Star Wars Galaxy map for WotC's SWd20 RPG.

3) Another atlas-module entitled: "Planescape: The Planes of the Multiverse". This one features an entry for every plane ever mentioned in any edition of D&D. And the key planes are given a "world map" showing their iconic locations, along with a mini-adventure.

4) A World-Builder's Guidebook, which guides DMs through a step-by-step process which results in a complete campaign world and world map. Blackmoor, Oerth, and Mystara are given as sample worlds which are built according to the WBG principles.

I'm thinking it will be released on sheet cake, written in icing.
The sheet cakes spoiled too fast in their internal play-test, so they switched to rules that are printed on foil over chocolate (like a chocolate Santa or Easter Bunny). There's going to be a new "you use the rule, you get to eat the rule" rule that will make the product one use only, like an escape room puzzle game. They are hoping to encourage repeat sales.

The secondary market in brokenly overpowered UA rules is going to be lucrative...

I doubt it. We didn't get an Unearthed Arcana for the Faction Rules in Ravnica, so I doubt we would get it for Planescape. They could easily just use those and build off of them and make them specific to Sigil.
Sorry, I'll clarify. A UA for player options somehow related to the Factions. Even if we don't get the Faction version of Piety or Dark Gifts or whatever scheme they come up with this time, there should be fairly obvious subclasses and races being tested. That's what's missing.

With no Mordon race or Defier Cleric domain in sight, any talk of Planescape is pure fancy. Not when we've got very specific releases for Spelljammer races and Krynn subclasses and feats.

I've learned to be wary of corp-speak. Could be a boxed set with contents that are different that previous attempts. Thus far, haven't all boxed sets for 5th been for Starter sets of some sort or other?
Yeah, I assume that it just means the table of contents will be different than other books and be slightly innovative.

I crit!
Liz Schuh let slip on Dragon Talk that upcoming products would have trays inside the box. I don't know what that looks like but sounds like something more utilitarian.
