D&D 5E Krynn's Free Feats: setting-specific or the future of the game?

What's the future of free feats at levels 1 and 4?

Unfortunately, it is impossible either to break ribs or to sever limbs in 5e. The states of being are alive, dying, dead, and undead.
where I don't know of any mechanic for broken ribs (in any of the 6 versions of D&D I have played) why can't you chop off a hand/arm? I know you can't do it mid fight (and I agree with that) but thieves loosing there hand as a punishment seems to not go against any rule...

backgounds have never been fluff only...
Never said they were. But a feat is a bigger deal mechanically than some skills and tool proficiencies. As for the feature, it is usually RP-related or at least encourages some RP.

You can if the GM agrees it makes sense for the situation you're in.

I wonder if the future of d20 system will be two different leveling up. One pillar would be the rank, how powerful, and the second one would be the grade, how much the PC knows.
not my first choice but I like it...

I always invisioned mixing Call of Cthulu skill system with 2e when I was younger (like how all the theif skills where %) and you could up the skills by useing them, so a 3rd level fighter and a 10th level fighter were better at BEING in combat... but the 3rd level one might have better skills

I like that backgrounds are just, well, background. Adding feats into all of them just turns them into another vehicle for trap choices and power gaming shenanigans. I am not opposed to it for certain settings and circumstances, but I would rather it not become a blanket part of backgrounds.

Well, there are 9 players for every DM. Players constantly push for more power, so it's kind of inevitable that when WotC puts out a survey they get an overwhelmingly positive response to power creep.
