The Beast of Averoigne is a Clark Ashton Smith story inspired by the Beast of Gevaudan. Castle Amber was notable for being Ashton Smiths works retold in RPG formIt also gets used as a reference in classic D&D module X2 Castle Amber, as I recall.
A bunch of them are used/referenced, but it's not exactly retellings of them. Castle Amber also references a couple of Poe stories the same way.The Beast of Averoigne is a Clark Ashton Smith story inspired by the Beast of Gevaudan.
