A little odd that the remote option positions are only for remote from Washington, Oregon, and Indiana.

I wonder if that has to do with specific state laws for those states.
There's an excellent chance this is the case. In the aftermath of COVID, my company has really opened up to remote workers in other states in a way we never have before. If we have an employee in Colorado, we've got to abide by the employment laws in Colorado. That might not sound like a big deal, but when we terminated an employee there we had to scramble to make sure we had their final check ready for them as was required by law. There are other states, Ohio is one, where the employment taxes are a bit odd and you've got to calculate them based on their city rather than just the state. We won't allow employees to live in California or New York because we don't want to deal with the regulations in those states.

Oh, wow. I don't think I'd ever take an exempt position for $42k a year. But then it's not like I have the talent or drive to be an RPG writer. Once again, I am reminded of why RPGs are a part-time gig for so many creative people.
Yep. No way I could take the pay cut to work there. Thus it's a hobby for me instead.

If I remember correctly, I remember some people online talked about Paizo staff often getting first choice of freelancer stuff within the company. Which is not a solution, but explains how some people manage to sneak by on that sort of pay.

At least they are unionized now...maybe they will be able to bargain for a more livable wage? I recall that the lack of work from home options was one of the issues employees were upset about. Or, perhaps Paizo just doesn't make that much money?

I assume Paizo is not set to handle income taxes for arbitrary jurisdictions and only wants to hire where their system already supports.
Very likely. I am in IT, and we have several employees who work remotely across Canada. Recently, someone was moving to the US and asked to continue working remote in the US, but we turned them down. The reason was the US income taxes. It was explained to me how costly it would be handling this person's finances.

40-90K is average starting wage in America. That sticks to just about every city. The average is for things like medical, tech, IT, etc... Paizo doesn't make that kind of money, so they are going to be bottom rung of the salary tiers.

40-90 can't be average. That's a range of greater than the lower value. It's such a wide range as to be meaningless. You nmight as well say "the average student scored 0-100% in the test".

The average is in the region of 75.

Starting 40K in a job like Paizo tester, 90K in a job like pharmaceutical tech. Very different fields with very different pay bands. Which is why saying 100K is average salary in the area, doesnt mean that Paizo is ripping people off.

"According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage of United States citizens as of December 2020 is $29.81, while the average weekly wage is $1034.41."

That's a year and a half old, but the hourly rate comes out to just over 59k and the weekly rate comes out to about 54k. Wages have been largely flat for most people, often barely keeping up with the rate of inflation so I wouldn't be too surprised if there wasn't much of an increase in those numbers. The idea that an average American can earn 70k+ a year in the remotely near future is a pipe dream.
