D&D 5E Is 5E Special

Did thst better for you, absolutely. But thst is hardly a universal experience. 5E has some serious advantages, such as natural.language design.
Oh God, don't even get me started on the flaws of "natural language design." That was one of the few outright openly BAD things 5e tried for. And they didn't even succeed! 5e is still FULL of jargon terms all over the place. Consider the incredible over-loading of the word "action," or "level."

Yes, if a 20qr Ranger and a 2024 can play in the same party and encounter monsters from vote 2014 and 2024 without the math breaking, that is complete compatibility in my book.
Then "completely compatible" means very little as you define it.

I would definitely cite that as a major part of the success of the edition, frankly. 5E books are pleasure reads, not chores, and theybhabe to make mechanics pretty straightforward to work in that framework.
