Beyond anecdotes, the data suggests that the "kids these days" are picking up the game fine. And my observations suggest thst is because of the system, not in spite of the system.I know five who were just fine.

Also, to be fair, that Anime trope of yelling power names actually comes from how Japanese D&D players interpreted vocal components in spell casting. If you were yelling power names like a DBZ character, that is entirely on you, not the system.

Did they play straight out the box 5e or did they "I didn't like this as a player so I'm going to change it"?I know five who were just fine.

Because I saw the latter screw up the game with the DM being to inexperienced to fix it. That's before favoritism, railroading, and bad encounter/adventure/campaign design.
I mean, going off half-cocked and trying to fix a system can go sideways, yes.Did they play straight out the box 5e or did they "I didn't like this as a player so I'm going to change it"?

Well, if the insinuation is we are biased, who isn’t?I bolded the important parts
Straight out of the box. Because they liked it.
One did it straight out of the box, before he even played it once as a player and it was totally ok. (He came from pre 3e DnD).
Edit: all the things you mentioned are system agnostic.
It just seemed odd to me to say it as a criticism of the game itself.Yes. This is right. But we just couldn't help it. So we were glad it went mostly away with essentials.
IME 5e stands up to that sort of thing a lot better previous wotc D&D editions. My memory of 2e is hazy, and I have only read older editions.I mean, going off half-cocked and trying to fix a system can go sideways, yes.
