They typically charge about $10 a prepainted mini in sets where you know what you are getting.

Recall that we used to get DDM boosters with 8 miniatures for less than $10. Yes, it has been 20 years, but according to the consumer price index we've only seen a ~60% total inflation over that period ... meaning it would be fair to see a similar product for $16.

Some of the price increases come in changes in petroleum costs, labor costs, etc... The paint on these minis is a little better. And you get more of the larger figures here than you would on an Archfiends booster. But does all of that add up to $84 in excess price increase?

It seems more likely that they're comfortable selling much fewer miniatures at much higher prices.

I think someone is going to find a way to mass produce RPG miniatures that are prepainted and cost efficient. When they do, if they can get a foothold and start to provide real compeititon, we'll see how the prices change.

I'm usually a nostalgia guy, but these leave me flat. I think we are spoiled by the sheer variety and quality of monster art these days. The price point is steep but these are not meant for table use, this is a collector-focused release. I know a few people who will grab these when they are released, just not me.

As the old saying goes: random, cheap, prepainted - choose two.

Back in the day, I used to have a Waldenbooks that would give you coupons based on purchases (I think it was a $10/$1 rate), and they often had double/triple days. Needless to say, my D&D book purchases paid for a lot of those DDM boosters! And for the first couple of set, most of those minis were horrible (I'm looking at you Corn-fed Farmer with Scythe). As time passed, they first started reducing the number of minis per set, then started jumping the prices, then quit altogether. I was happy when Wizkids started to produce them, but with each set the prices are climbing and getting more outrageous as they try in many cases to milk the nostalgia outta these things.

If I hadn't bought into so many plastic minis over the years, I think I'd have gone with the acrylic standees that have come out of late. Easier storage, at the least.

At first, I thought this was going to be some of the oooooold sculpts. I’m pleasantly surprised to find it’s not.

Not that there’s anything WRONG with some of the early minis- I have many of them. But I like variety and new interpretations.
