Everyone is responding to that comment with 3e, 4e, and 5e, and I'm over here looking at this, which is on the FRONT cover lol

Officially, it will either be called 5E, 5E Revised, or the Anniversary Edition. I personally suspect Anniversary Edition, since they're specifically timing it with the Golden Anniversary of the game. Common parlance will either to continue to call it by the official name or just 5E, although some might use 5.5. Hell, when I talk about 3E, I don't bother with the 3.5 revision unless it's to make a comparison between it and 3E.

"Cool, which version of 5e are we playing."

"Core + 1"

"So 2014 core or 2024 core."

"They're the same"

"So I use whichever grappling rules and spells are in the core book I have?"

"No, it's treated just like errata, we're using the most recent ones."

"Wow, that's a lot of errata!"

"Right. In the 5e we're using the e stands for errataed."

The first playtest document suggests that, whether or not you view it as an improvement, it's certainly more significant than a .001 change.
I agree but it's only a first step. There's too much behind the curtain, I want to see it keep up rather than tacking to the old way of 5e as much as possible everywhere else

One of the terms of the OGL is that you can't say "Dungeons and Dragons" or "D&D" in your third-party product. Publishers broadly talk about "Fifth Edition" or "5E" instead, and most of us understand what they mean. Even if WotC wants to ditch edition numbers on their own products, OGL publishers still need to show compatibility with the updated rules without using WotC's trademarks. So, some other name besides OneD&D will probably stick around.
